I haven't found any really good USB 2.0 interfaces. So I think I'll go FireWire.
And doubt. Take a look at this guy here:http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/qu.../p38199h-29d4488b65c29f1db28d65947ad39017.jpg

Two channels say Mic/Instrument and the rest say Mic/Line. So are there only two slots where I can connect instruments and if I wanna connect more, I need a DI box? Do Mic preamps not work for instruments?

Yup, that's how it works. Think of the 1/4" ins and the XLR ins as two separate ins. so all of the XLR have pre amps for a mic.

I've got that exact unit and we usually ran v-drums into 1 and keys into 2. Everything else was either XLR or coming from a pedal.

Aw man...that's just plain annoying. So there are NO interfaces with more than two instrument ins? All the ones I see have one two!

I think most people don't really have the need. People are either micing everything or running out from a pedal or line out from an amp.

What are you recording that you need more than 2?

Oh right, you don't preamps when you're going through pedals. Hmm...that should basically solve it, then. I'm not recording anything that absolutely needs that. I'm just sort of a nut that way. I like recording in single takes and preferably with a bunch of instruments to accompany, but not record. Hmm...I don't know how to explain.

And dude, can you take a look at the M-Audio and take it apart for me? Like pros, cons, and stuff?

To me the Profire and Firestudio look like pretty comparable units. I notice that the SPDIF i/o on the profire is optical and on the fire studio it's coax. Not sure if that makes a difference to you or not, my pedal uses coax.

If MIDI is a huge consideration it looks like you need to buy a separate cable, Not sure why they don't put the midi connections on the unit.

Now this next one could go either way, Once the units in a rack it would be a pain switching cables on the M-Audio. On the firestudio all the ins are on the front and everything else is on the back. Some people like them on the front some like them on the back, personal preference really.

That's all I got for now.

I use the m-audio profire and its excellent - especially cos you can run protools and any other program you want. it has 2 instrument inputs and 8 mic/xlr inputs. i found one for $600 on ebay. i also love that it has 2 headphone outs on the front with their own volume controls!! it really is a nice unit although i have heard the same thing about rme, motu and presonus. i think in this day and age with a little research its very hard to buy bad gear

this is one thing that pisses me off hahaha. luckily my profire sits on a little table not in a rack although im dreading the day i buy fx racks etc and end up putting it in one.
