Recommendation For A Compressor

I would like to get an outboard compressor to use when I record with my 4-Track cassette recorder. I have a budget of about $150.00 to spend on the compressor. I know it's not much but as I am married with my first child due in two months it's all I can afford.

I was hoping that some of you in the forum could recommend me a decent compressor for $150 or less. I really don't want one with presets and I would like to get one that has manual control over ratio, threshold, attack, and release. I will only be compressing one instrument or vocal at a time so I only need a one channel compressor.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

There are a few econo-condensors at the $99 level, none of which are really all that great. If you had to go with one I'd recommend the Audio Technica AT2020.

If you can save your pennies for a while, though, you'd probably find that it'd well worth it to step up to the ~$300 level for an AT4040 or MXL V69.

This could help you...

No it couldn't. He wants a compressor, not a condenser (mic).

Get a RNC. They show up often on Gearslutz or TapeOp for $135 or so.

I agree, I think an RNC would be a really good choice. I believe you can get them new for $175, so that's what I would suggest if you can come up with the extra $25.

I guess i should get a rnc too. I'm selling some unneeded used college books that i still have and if i sell em all, i could buy and rnc and still have a little left over. Trying to decide if i wanna get that rnc, a new preamp(vtb-1), or get the at4040. I'll have enought to get one of those three. Yep. I'm a gear junkie. Been lusting after the same gear for months but always end up havin to spend my money on my car.

And after that, there's always blood, plasma and semen to be sold to finance gear sluttery!

1.To squemish for giving blood.
2.Not to sold on the idea of giving plasma.
3.I don't wanna be a "baby's daddy"!!!!

You know what's funny? My car was only 500 bucks more than the at4040! My studio rig cost more than my car!!! Runs good tho! :D

Used RNCs typically go for @$125-150 or so. Make sure you get the right wallwart with it. Check the Gearslutz sale board. I recollect seeing a couple listed there the other day. Do a search for RNC there as some are not listed in the post title but in the body of the post as part of an equipment list.
