Recommend vocal mic in $500 range

bought the at4040 (tooo thin) its not what u are looking for try the mxl v69, adk hamburg, or maybe the mk319 with mods
i find darker mics don't have that "thin" thing going on very often
also check out a tube pre with the the sm7 might do it for ya
 
It all depends as to what type(s) of vocals are you trying to record. I hated this answer 5 years ago, but now, with a decent collection of mics, I see it to really be true. For my voice, I prefer the SM57 & RE20. Everyone who comes in to record has different mic preferences. Id pick up a couple mics instead of settling on one based off of recommendations here. It is akin to playing guitars - you need to try a bunch to know which you prefer.

Things to look at: SM57, SM7, RE20, AT3035, 441. Also understand that preamp and converters will impart a sound
