Recommend a good looper

I'm wanting a looper, but I don't want anything too complicated. It would be nice if I could use it live, but that's probably not absolutely necessary at this point. I know absolutely nothing about them, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about them either so I'll watch this thread for the learning.

One question ...... why would it be nice if you could use it live?

Since we pretty much can't GET you to play anything in front of anyone at Jamfest.

I have the Line 6 JM4 and I can't complain. It has a lot of jam tracks that are fun to practice with as well as a wide selection of drum loops you can use. The looping functions couldn't be easier. It uses sd cards so room is never a problem. If I had to complain it would be that if you want to put a song on the memory card to play along with it has to be a mono wav file. I wish you could just dump mp3's onto the card. It does have an 1/8" input for mp3 players but you can't slow them down if you're trying to learn a tricky part.

Anyrate, like mentioned above, stereo is nice and I have the mono JamMan. However, they have a stereo unit out, replacing their original. I erased all the factory loops long ago, as they were ok, but nothing worthy to keep. I also upgraded the internal card to a 2 gig as the original came with 256mb. That gives me 3 hours I think... maybe 6, cant remember.

I use the unit almost exclusively for backing tracks now and have about 60 songs in it (mono .wav files) which I edit on the computer and then dump via USB. That way I can match volumes up best, etc. I use Harbal (gasp!) just for this only. Works great. That's why I'd like the stereo unit, but thinking further, a laptop would serve me better...maybe, except I couldn't use my feet to easily trigger it without MIDI switching and all that jazz.

The looper works great, and sounds VERY good on playback. 10 tracks(loops) going and they all sound pretty darn close what you put into it. After a bit, you learn to start/stop RIGHT on the beat, as you step on the unit with some authority. I got the external switcher too. That way I can scroll up 35 songs while I'm in the middle of another song. When it ends, starts the new song. You can make a loop, single shot or whatever.

I bought it because it holds the most data by FAR over any other brand. I'm sure the others are fine, but this thing has worked for 3 years, 3 times a week and holds ALOT of .wav files.

Occasionally I'll patch it for looping, but the backing tracks are what I do. I'd recommend it...but get the stereo unit now. They are all about the same price. There are LE versions of this and I think the other brands too. You save about $100- 150 off the $300 street with these lesser units.

Can't think of anything else, unless you have questions.
 
There's also the Line6 I think that's about $500... I think this is the unit and price. But it gives you more options of adding and removing loops...like up to three I think. Good for building a song and then "backing" back down.

The other loopers only let you take off the last loop you add. So if you build a rhythm bed up, you're basically stuck with it, until you stop the unit. That's the only draw back. If you could "peel" off selected loops, somehow..... you could get pretty creative without being so repetative. I don't think there's one on the market though. Good thing to invent and then retire!

I have one of the new Digitech Jammans and it's a very nice unit. With a memory card, it can store up to 16 hours on 99 user spots of backtracks, drumtracks, or rhythms done on the fly. I still want a Boss RC 50 but they have a large footprint compared to the Jamman. Still they allow 3 seperate loops to be created on the fly and have a huge potential with this option. Lots of vids on youtube of guys doing the one man band thing with the rc 50. Check this guy out.

Well, for kicks I read this thread through the holidays. Never knew what a looper (loop station, Jam Man, etc) was, so I was enlightened.
And intrigued.
And I had Christmas money.
And there was one listed on Craigslist.
And it was virtually brand new.
And the price was quite reasonable.

And now I own a Boss RC-50.

I need to shift down now to start the long incline up the learning curve. :eek:
