he he

Well I was a synth person until I discovered native instruments range of soft synths and now I figure stuff spending $3000 or more for a synth that has limitations when I can get something like Absynth for a fraction of the price and that gives flexibility of on going upgrades and third party upgrades.
And more importantly very cool and full sounds.
I have bought the full range of Native instrument Plugins but even better they are Stand alone synths so I can just midi them to my kbd and Play without having to access them through programs like Cubase and Cakewalk.

I have

B4 A Hammond b3 simulator and man it is so close to the real thing.
Fm7 A Fm synth to get all those classic Yamaha Dx series sounds.
Absynth 3 Lush and atmospheric synth and more.
Electric Piano For those Rhodes and Clav sound Again Very close.
Pro 53 Classic Prophet 5 Synth Sounds and more.
Reaktor Lets you build your own synths using Modulars
Guitar rig Guitar effect and Cabinet simulator (unbelievable sounds)
Vokator A vocoder for robotic type vocals

It goes on, and download the Demo versions they are brilliant if you want to find out for yourself.

I even think you can use these with reason as Plugins , all you will need is a Midi Kbd That takes Midi messages and has control knobs and you would have all the synths you need, and they are high end sounding sounds ( Believe me )
As I said look for yourself.
For the price of a Top end synth you could just about have every type of Kbd sound you would ever want with the Native Instruments range.
I love it as I was in the same position with having good software but being worried about having top sounding synth and kbd sounds.

Thats my 2 cen'ts worth and hope you check out my suggestion as I think you will be pleasently suprised.

Regards Raver

Okay, fellas. You're scaring the guy away with your endless discussions.
I would rather want to know just how old his son is, cause in the end, that is what should determine what he buys.
If the kid is young, reason will do fine, and he will have plenty of space to grow and it is a much softer place to start and develop your interest in music.
If he's older, he might appreciate the hands-on approach and the sound that a hardware synth can provide.
