Realistic Microphones

Were none of you numb nuts ever a recording newb?

not really. i recorded an album once with a band i was in and realized then that i didn't know shit about being in the studio....so i took some recording classes to get my feet wet, ended up being pretty good at it, and am now pursuing degrees in both business admin. and recording arts

all this was done, of course, so that i would be educated enough to not do/ask the type of stupid shit that some people do

Hi

I just cant understand why it doesn't sound as good as Puff Daddy.

...ok...now we know this is a hoax 'cause any respectable rapper knows it's "P-Diddy" now...oh...sorry...make that "Diddy"...(not "Diddy" anymore?)...ok..."Sean Combs"...any respectable rapper knows it's Sean Combs!!?... ;)

i want to think this is a joke...but who would go through the trouble for a one time joke?

but...this has every rookie cliche....there's no way this person is serious

Luckily, it was so long ago that the Internet had a different name, fewer than 10,000 users and they all did science or weapons, not home recording. The opportunities for embarrassing one's self on a global scale didn't really exist.

Cheers,

Otto

many years ago they were putting Radio Shack name brands like realistic, on Shure mics.

and other better name brands.

I think at one point the CEO fo RS smoked a lot of crack and for some reason thought he was "upgrading" things by putting his Radio Shack label on them.

but they sure did....they bought from SONY, Shure, Yamaha..and stuck the Realistic plastic label on their just to impress people.

Which mic should I buy, why can't I buy it at Radio Shack, and which way do I point it?"

because radio shack is not where you want to buy pro nor home studio equipment....for all the newbees, i know you dont wanna spend money, you wanna do things as cheap as you can, but when you go that route it WILL show in the quality of your music if your music means anything to you. do a search and almost everytime someone will say "why cant the microphone i bought at wal-mart, radio shack, piggly wiggly, sound as good as the music i hear on the radio. it is proved time and time again and i promise you the results will be the same for you. go to a PRO audio music store and talk to peeps and ask around. dont believe what you saw on the movie Hustle & Flow. it doesnt work that way.

Nicely put. I have a few of them. I wish there was a list of who made what model.

realistic mics

Radio shack mics are terrible..I bought a cordless b4 I really got into it and had ant knowledge in this field. The sales guy assured me it was as good as any...haaaa...made my 8000 system sound like blown speakers...my neice uses it to sing karaoke in her basement..I now use Shure beta 87a and its crystal clear ...so dont buy junk I also learned the hard way..

Hi

I know the realistic mic is good quality as I picked the best one they had in the shop. The salesman assured me I would get good rap vocals with it. I just cant understand why it doesn't sound as good as Puff Daddy. I am using the best quality creative labs soundcard and speakers as well.

I am confused as how having two monitors will help the sound?

The phantom power does nothing to the sound, it seems pointless.

Bryan

Now its officially a troll. i wanted to give the this guy a chance, but "Puff Daddy"? He hasn't used that name in like 10 years. Its P. Diddy wow. This ovbiously some old white guy who got tired of phishing for little boys and girls and now wants something else to beat it to. Oh ya, I think MJ recorded Beat It with a Realistic.

But on a side note, why do two pages of people have to chime in that Radio Shack doesn't make good mics? Wasn't the first page enough?

because there WILL be twenty other rappers that have seen hustle & flow and wonder why their songs didnt come out as clears as it did on that movie, and they wont believe the first page, so hopefully two pages will soak it in.

Hi

I have a Realistic microphone that I use to record rap vocals. For some reason it always seems to sound muffled when compared to comercial records. This is even when listening through my excellent quality creative labs computer speakers. Does anybody have any advice on how to get some better quality from my realistic microphone? I have tried turning on the phantom power but it doesn't make any difference??

Bryan

Now I am no Recording Post forensics expert, but I am smellng a great big dirty commie rat here. There appears to be a lot of key words here that have been utilized to push all the buttons of the regular reader of this forum. The use of the word Realistic certainly will boil the blood of microphone nazis, add the word rap and you can send th same person into a frenzy. The comparison to commercial records is an old standard. Making reference to "excellent quality speakers" sets of some warning bells. Adding salt to the wound by mentioning the Realistic word a second time, the reference to phantom power brings back memories of a similar post that caused great controversy and weeks of mirth and then the gentlemanly signing with the fist name. But maybe Im just a cynical curmudgeon.

I was just kickin meself for a couple of spelling mistakes in me last post but I guess after the previous post I have forgiven myself. I think I followed ya drift there Northern. :)

First of all, don't listen to all these guys who diss you. They are just bitter because they spent a lot of time and money on expensive equipment before companies like Radio Shack started making equipment equal to or exceeding that which is found in pro studios.

Realistic mics are excellent for recording, and the reason you are getting a muffled sound is not because of the mic itself, but how you are positioning it in front of your face. What the pros DON'T tell you is that because of its unique frequency characteristics, you have to hold it to your nose, and NOT your mouth.

Once you do this, you will get a much better sound, but it still won't be studio quality. That's because the difference in what you track and what you hear on a professional recording is always done in the mixing stage. And you are in luck: Realistic makes some GREAT equalizers. Just get a stereo Y cable, plug one end into your stereo line-out of your pc and into your equalizer. The output of your equalizer (using a similar cable) goes into the mic input of your soundblaster (or whatever your soundcard is. Soundblaster is the soundcard pros use, but if you have something cheaper, hopefully it will be as good).

Boost the highs where necessary, and don't forget to use the "stereo expander" on the unit to separate your mix as hard left and right as possible.

the slams are funnier on this post... :p

but its true, interesting change of the times..
a friend of mine was doing pretty good for RS many years ago. he ran a few stores or some regional shit. but RS wasn't actually making their own stuff on many items then. He talked about it a lot being in sales.

there was a big push from many of the RS sales guys wanting to be "released" to tell the customers who REALLY made the stereo or microphone or
whatever, as some salesmen realized it might help to sell it by saying "its really a Shure mic" instead of "its our new Ultima Optima-Shack mic!!"
....or "it's really a SONY reciever!" instead of "it's our new Optimus-Radio Shack line!!" .......frkn makes me laugh. they really thought they were BIGGER than everyone. HAHAHAHAA I thought they sucked, I don't know why really...they just suck.

and you can see today thats what finally happened. RS dropped their "fake Optimus-Realistic name game" on most items; they leave the SONY or Panasonic name on the steroe units and some mics.

and yeah Shure was a supplier to the Radio Shack line, at least around 78 to 84 timeframe. (which does not mean those plastic crap shit mics RS sold were made from Shure...only a few models If I recall.) My brothers got one thats identical to a 57, but it says some funky RS stupid name on it.

I don't know who'd would have kept the list.

my 2 cents... just buy a frkn Shure 57 and 58 and go. You can't go wrong.
Then move into the LD's and shotguns when you get a clue to recording.

Radio Shack wasn't ever that much cheaper? as many post...they were actually more expensive than a lot of places, not cheaper. They were trying to be a higher end, audiophile specialist shop in their own mind anyway.

I think selling cellphones saved them. My firend was fired eventually, I think he started selling cocaine from his stores or something.

Damn right. And another well kept secret is the fact that we actually hear with our eyes! It's the unexpected twist in Albert Bregman's landmark book "Auditory Scene Analysis" !

However, all Radio Shack mics are not made alike. I call to witness the mighty PZM, which is easily as good a beast as its' Crown rival costing several times as much.

Is the microphone actually in your mouth? Or are you just holding it up to it? That's a common mistake newbies make, you have to shove that thing in your mouth and sing

If I could give rep right now... tomorrow. Tomorrow.
