True. I am new to the world of mixing live-recorded drums myself. In addition to the two overheads out front, I began using a SM 58 as a distant room mic, too. I read an article that explained that when mixing the drums, it is best to start by soloing the two overheads, panning them to stereo, and then EQ-ing them both for an optimal sound. Once you have done that, then bring up the kick mic, EQ that, bring up the bottom and top snare (making sure to reverse the phase on the bottom snare), EQ those, and so on.
