True. I am new to the world of mixing live-recorded drums myself. In addition to the two overheads out front, I began using a SM 58 as a distant room mic, too. I read an article that explained that when mixing the drums, it is best to start by soloing the two overheads, panning them to stereo, and then EQ-ing them both for an optimal sound. Once you have done that, then bring up the kick mic, EQ that, bring up the bottom and top snare (making sure to reverse the phase on the bottom snare), EQ those, and so on.

If your using a DAW in your computer, you can make a copy of track 1 and then paste the copy into track 2. Eq one track for the snare and the other for the cymbels. You can also use Comp. in the same way for each track.

I appreciate all of your helpful hints for my issue. The band I was in and mixing for has given up the effort. We are no longer. I am playing with another band now and I hope to present all of you with a new set of issues. :)

Be sure to tell your new drummer to play properly when being recorded ! :D
