RE20 on vocals vs. condenser

Id have to look back to see if that design was arround in 1971...but you could be right...but you could be thinking of the RE15 which I have footage of Paul using live...and was Elvis' choice as well...but visually you could not mistake the two mics.

The RE15 was my first decent mic...I stole it from my HS...they just left it on a stand in the stage area.
 
I picked up to RE27 (ND) for cheap, because the radio station that owned them went back to RE20. They also commented about them being somewhat "edgier".

My use for them is the lack of proximity effect for talent that gobbles the mic.
It has a very wide cardioid pattern which makes it well suited for bluegrass groups that "step forward" to solo.

They are so damn heavy, they don't play well on a conventional mic stand bracket. The suspension cage is more workable.

I found them to be really nice for live acoustic work for those same reasons also- guitars can work the mic, doesn’t get weird on the sound hole.
I don't see the pattern being particularly tight, more that it's well behaved.
