After a few listens - my favorite part of the vocals is the very last thing you belted out. A couple more "belt outs" like that would be great for the tune in my opinion.
Recording and mixing of the vocals sound just fine.

Okay, you've already been stroked to the max on this thread, so I'll just say the vocals are very nice. Unique. Good phrasing. The harmonies really add to it. Excellent job. As others have said, it makes me wonder why I bother when I listen to you and SLuiCe and several others. *sigh*

I like your singing just fine, but that's cuz I like the sound of your voice. But if you don't like it so much, you can always do what I do when I feel that way. Get into the vocal delivery again and again looking for something that tells the song better than just singing can do. After a while the search gets you so desperate that things start to happen. LOL

I'm really glad you're singing again.

nice

not and Ozzy fan but this is cool. Is this your most natural singing or do you attempt to change it for each song.

I voted anonoumously that the singer is good so nobody would know. :)

Hell where I come from if you can sing on key your usually hired right off the bat. I like the structure. Never heard you "softened" up before, but I like it. I dig, but I'd like to hear a little more of the emotion you normally reflect though.

I think the whole thing sounds great. The songs of yours I've heard in the past were always a bit "synthy" for my taste, but this was awesome. It's a really good song. Nice harmonies.

What makes this song work for me is the vocal melody, wrapped in the harmonies as they flow over the chord progression. There are so many hooks in there. That so many of them find themselves together in one song is just awesome.

The only thing I don't like about the song is the opening riff in the intro - it seems kind of out of place and doesn't gel. Then again it only goes for about 5 seconds, then it's straight into the good stuff

Hey Man,
Cool stuff here man! NICE TUNE... and arrangement. This'n flows well... ...Sammy's got a single!

Nice vocs here man. I like the performance. Its sung well and full of power. As you know, I get that ozzy thing too occasionally so Ive always gotten into listening to what you do with your vocs....so i can steal your ideas:D ....One thing i have found re: my own louder vocs is how much harder they are to record well than a more controlled "breathy" vocal. I find it harder to control the gain of the voc... ...and i wonder if it is the Pre, as tom mentioned, that gives the gain that looser top end. What kind of pre are you using? Ive done my past vocs of that type w/ a dbx mini-pre, and im working on an upgrade in the near future. ...I'll let you know if i notice any improvement.
I dig the moving bg vocs.... ..nice dynamically. The only suggestion i would have would be to thin the vocs out (number of vocal tracks or effects) during the verses so the choruses/Big sections come out that much bigger. ...small nit, and totally preference.

Those little percussive bits are killer. ....panning and all. I really like them in the song.. ...I guess thats part of my arrangement compliment but i wanted to mention them again... ...SWEET!

...Now i know i hit this late, but dont gimme one of those lame-assed group "thanks for listening guys". ....I guess that means youve gotta answer em all... ...and youve got a boatload here...

heeeee heeeeee heeeee heeeeee

Monster Tune here brutha! I always look forward to a finished Samicide tune!!!

j/k

I'm working on a response right now.. I'm home with a bit of a stomach virus, so I have to do it little by little because I have to run to the bathroom every few minutes.. I think it's just stress..

the coffee didn't help.. :(

I'll be back later..

First off, good powerful song. I feel compelled to acknowledge that even though it's not news to you.

Your singing is fine. It's actually quite good. Execution is very tight. Harmonies are interesting and good.

Honestly with all the effects on the vox, I don't know if you need a better mic or not. I can't figure out how people can tell. There is a little lack of clarity, but is it the mic or something you're doing to the recording afterward? I honestly can't tell.

Good job though. Trip-wire.

<edit> Some of the backing vocals seemed pretty hard panned. My only vocal complaint.

Of course the vocals are good. It might be a good idea to try to de-emphasize the Ozziness, however. You will never escape the comparisons.

Man I love that guitar sound and melody at the beginning. Actually, I love all the guitar sounds. This is a great song. I think the vocal FX work well in this song as it has little electronica to it. Usually I want your vocals much drier. I still want to hear them dry. Have you ever done a completely dry recording? That might answer some of those mic questions.

Drums sound cool too. Nice feel and sound. Overall I think you have put together a great song.

Now to your vocal poll:

I will vote blows....

as in blows anything away I could ever do. ;) :D

OK - I'll just give this ***** Great work.

PS - I do think the vocals (either due to the FX or mic) are thinner and less dramatic sounding than the rest of the tune. The sound just falls a little short. Cool panning by the way. "Fuck it!" ;) :)

Cool song. Good singing, but as noted, sounds way too much like Ozzy. Your harmonies were cool and the layering was a nice effect. You have your own style that you need to expound and build on, IMHO, that you've showcased in songs like Safety Dance, Riches to Rags... someone help me out here... I think your "own voice" is too cool to put aside and come off with an obvious OZZFEST.

Besides, Ozzy sucks. :p

On a side note, if you cut the song hard at 3:16 it seems to make more sense than going back into that electronic progression again for it to trail off. I did really like that change up, but the repeat made it lose it's appeal for some reason.

I'd love to know how you recorded this. The music kicks ass.

thanks A LOT!

SLuiCe - we talk..

Doug H - Tull are great.

Jamal Bucket - yeah.. I'd be saying the same thing if others were hiding behind effects like I'm doing.. thanks!

mixmkr - hi mix.

fprod south - good point.. I guess the reason the music sounds better is because I usually spend a week on the music, and just one afternoon improvising lyrics and laying vocals.. Once the vocals are layed down, I find the need to distance myself from the stench as quick as possible.. I have to put more time into the sound or spend some more money that I don't have.. either way I'm unhappy with the sound, and the vocal performance... enter the instrumentals.. thanks!

Piltdown Man - thanks for bothering to say something!

dobro - thanks dobro! more instrumentals it is!

songbird - it all depends on the mood and song.. some songs are heavy and the vocals get uglier than this.. thanks for checking it out!

Toki 987 - 'softened up.' good description.. thanks Toke!

mbuster - thanks! it's a bit easier to do synth tunes, so that's probably why I do more of them..

Bulls Hit - thanks B.H.! it does sound out of place.. it seemed like a cool type of count off to me I guess..

I'll finish the replys after the Simpsons..

What kind of pre are you using?

http://www.digitech.com/products/vocal300.htm - with a 58..I did something different this time.. I set this thing to be totally clean, and used the 788 preset.. comp/gate/de-ess/chorus/rev. I just used this as a way to get into the 788 without adaptors. I wonder if bringing all the vocals down a bit would help.. I can't afford much right now so I'll have to wait a little while before getting a real pre.. someway I'll get them better.. the only effects on them was the 788 preset.. I don't know man.. I'm gonna try some surgical e.q. in the future.. I really thought this thread would be off the front page by the time you came around.. you would have been sent a p.m. immediately after! :D thanks Mike! a thread would not be complete without you!

Triple M - another anticipated ear.. agree about the backing vocs.. should not have panned so hard.. also I planned on adding a few more but since I'm working with an 8 track, I was too lazy to do anymore bounces.. thanks for the on the money ears again!

ashulman - it just happens naturally.. probably from listening to Sabbath non-stop for years.. it doesn't sound that way to me, but thanks! I can think of worse comparisons..

skids - " Have you ever done a completely dry recording?" I thought this WAS on the dry side!:D listening to it now I really hear them.. thanks a lot skids! I spent a week on the music and one afternoon improvising lyrics and laying the vocals down.. and it sounds that way..

rats - thanks rats! I put a gear list on the previous page.. it has everything I used on this.. probably the only reason it sounds halfway decent is because I spent a lot of time on it.. I wish I could say I whipped it up in 2 hours or something.. I must have listened to this 250 times before adding vocals, just tweaking... and smoking... and tweaking.. I can't do anything about the Ozzy thing, but then again if someone said you sounded like your favorite band, that's not the worst thing.. it comes natural I guess after listening to Sabbath since I was in 4th grade..

------------------- thanks A LOT everyone! this place makes me want to record..

after all this time posting music you get to know people, and I would be lying if I said I didn't love reading the replies! :D

thank you!
