racks aren't popular?!?!

Hi, I've been playing guitar for about 3 years now, and only recently have gotten some decent equipment. I wanted to sell a rackmount amp (a mesa which definately has high resale value), but the guy at same ash told me that he could only give me like $200 for an amp that costs $1200 new!! Insulted by his offer, I firmly demanded what the hell his problem was at insulting my intelligence. Turns out I'm not that smart. Anyone have an idea why rackmount equipment isn't that popular?

yeah, i plan to do that, i was just wondering why they aren't as popular anymore... like guitar stores are loaded with heads and what not but not rack mount stuff... :-(

It's not that they aren't popular.

Think about it.

The guy at Sam Ash can't sell that amp for more than half original list - if you paid $1200 for it new, that means he'll only be able to get $600 - which means he can't give you but $200-300 for it.

It's not that he doesn't value the amp, it's just that he has to make money on it.

but it's also true that in the last few years there's been a proliferation of boutique companies making "vintage styled" amps, mainly tube amps, and obviously those things are never racked -- i think a racked amp has a bit of an "early 90's" or even 80's vibe to it compared to a good "old fashioned" upholstered head that sits on the cab, even if it is something as solid and good as a boogie.
 
It's all business... and trade ins or consignment, are always painful... sell private if your easily insulted.... and make sure you put "FIRM" behind your price.
