Hi, I'm Troy McLure. You might remember me from such posts as "Samson vs Fostex Monitors: Battle of the Gods That Never Were" or "Using Stepdown Transformers: What Mrs. O'Leary's Cow Should Have Known."

Can anyone recommend a rackmount digital multitrack recorder up to about $1,500 (USD)??? I've seen the same four "table top" kind of models offered by Roland, Fostex, Tascam, Korg, and Yamaha over and over again in Musician's Friend and AMS catalogs. The only rackmounts I've seen were a Fostex that has disappeared from the catalogs and a Roland that is so drastically reduced in price (in AMS catalog) that it makes me a might suspicious.

Surely, somebody makes a quality rackmount digital recorder???

Any help will be most indoubitably appreciated.

Jason

Alesis ADAT"S Rule!!!!!!!! (and rackmountable too!)

Roland has a rackmount multitracker I think it`s the 880 (or something like that) but I heard it`s pretty good,I guess you can be the judge.....go to rolands web site and check it out. Also I know that Fostex has a 24 track recorder that`s a rackmount and I hear nothing but good things about that.Alesis adat is cool and alota people use them but I prefer a hard drive over tape anyday even if it`s digital tape it`s still tape.

Yo Tovarich Jason:

I have my Yam MD8 recorder on my synthesizer three tier rack but I don't have it bolted down; it just rests on the metal arms.

Can't comment on the Roland boxes but the 890 is their latest addition to the madness.

If I remember correctly, if you buy Roland, you have to buy a Roland CD burner as nothing else will work with a Roland recorder. [I might be wrong on this one as newer Roland boxes are out there.]

The Yam MD8 is a decent recorder but because of Yam and its many products, it is not as good as some of the 24 bit boxes. There are several 24 bit boxes out there including Fostex among others.

You might want to get a Full Compass catalog and check prices with them; they are very competitive. You can reach them on the net.

Well, time for a Vodka on the rocks.

i used to have the Fostex 24 track. sold it though, NOT cus it was bad, got twomackie HD recorders instead cus i bought 2 d8bs,interfaced better. Get the fostex man, it's a great unit. good performance, quality sound, and it's 24 bit, obviosuly. get it, i doubt you'll have problems. and you can connect sound forge up to it to edit in waveforms...allthough i never tried it.

i have a friend who runs a studio, and he has the Fostex D108 and the D1624 together, synced up, sounds really nice.

The ONLY bad thing i noticed was,,....say you're doing vocals and you wanna punch in a phrase, when you punch out, you cant punch back in unless you hit stop.
