Rack Question

This is my first post (and the only one I've actually needed to post, as quick searches have provided me with a lot of info so far...)
I've just purchased an RNC on the overwhelmingly positive reviews for it here, and I have a few more pieces that have no on/off switch. Do I need to unplug these units (ART MP, Rolls Headphone Amp) when I'm through? Or can they, like home stereo equipment, be left on for a night or two?
If they must be unplugged do I need to zero out the input on each? I do have a fairly decent surge suppressor that they go in to...
Thanks in advance for any advice....and for all the advice I've already received!
 
You don't need to unplug them. I leave a lot of stuff on 24/7. There is a slight chance of fire if one of the transformers decides to blow up so if you want to be careful than just turn off the power strip they are attached to.
 
I would use a current distribution box (or whatever you call it in English) with an on/off switch an turn it and other units off. I think it could be harmful in the long run to keep it turned on.

I'm not sure about it....But at least I think you will keep your payments for electricity down by turning it all off. It's not dead in stand by mode, it's working...

And your'e on the safe side too, not connected to anything.

Turn 'em off...

You don't want to be leaving any of your gear on 24/7. It adds to your electricity bill,is evironmentally unfriendly and worst of all, it shortens the life of your tubes (in the ART MP). Nothing can accidently catch on fire and burn your house down if it's been unplugged.

On the other hand switching stuff on and off every 10 minutes when you leave the room is also bad for the equipment. You should try and find a healthy balance. If you're not going to be using a certain unit for the next 4 hours, turn it off.

Very well said. The best way to do this is to plug the warts into a power strip with an on/off switch. Just switch off the power while you are away for extended periods.

Thanks for all the good advice. I will use the power strip to power down at the end of a session.
Any thoughts about needing to turn levels down on preamps, compressors, headphone amps? It would be handy to leave levels up if I'm going to come back to the same project the next day. Do such units ramp-up to avoid overload, or do I risk blowing tubes etc.?
 
Surge protecotrs dont protect against lightning. The best thing for audio equipment would probably be to unplug it, thus totally disconnecting said expensive equipment from any extreme voltage spikes. Even a circuit breaker is only good for intrupting a certian amount of current in a certian amount of time.
