with units like these why do so many people seem to use mixers?

explain what you mean.
You mean in a live situation or just doing some multitracking and recording?

why use the mixers for recording, can't you mix in the software. Is it to take advantage of EQing the channels, or using the mixer to go to one input on the interface?

Its just a preference for some people.
I personally track everything with minimal FX or EQ going into the computer via a firepod. I can do all eq and compressor stuff later... no need to waste time/sanity on setting that stuff up during a recording session. All you need to do is set levels/gain and place the mics and you're ready to go.
BTW, i've gotten some great results with the firepod. Excellent pre's for the price.

Thank you for all the great help everybody...

now i'm considering getting a firepod! ach, now i don't know what to do! :)

the firepod acts as an audio interface for the computer AND a mixer, correct?
of course if i got a firepod i'd more or less have to get a new computer... which i was considering doing anyway...

i'm going to take us back to the other rack pieces here for a sec... i was wondering what people would suggest for the following:

preamp for: trombone/sax/acoustic guitar/vocals
multieffects for: jazz/rock/electronica
and i have no idea what to look for in terms of EQ and compression. Compression should be my main focus after the preamp, correct?

and if i got the firepod i could conveniently have all my gear in one rack more or less, right?

I don't regret buying a Motu 896hd at all. It's fair at just about everything it does.
