I'm going to buy a Behringer Ultra G direct in box for my guitar.

So the DI box will take a signal from my preamp pedal, as its an input.

However, the ultra G only has a balanced XLR output,
and I want to be able to play the guitar through my computer.

So my quetion is, How do I play an XLR balanced signal into the line in of my sound blaster live soundcard? Is that even possible? do I just need an XLR => 1/8 cable? or do I just need to custom wire a cable (which I have some experience)?

Thanks!

I think you pretty much got it. You need to get an adapter or do a custom cable from XLR down to 1/8-in. The audio quality likely won't be stellar. You might consider upgrading your soundcard.

You will need a mic preamp.
The DI is going to convert the HiZ output of the guitar to the equivalent of a LowZ mic signal.
You may be better off forgoing the Ber DI for a decent mic pre that offers HiZ DI.
A DMP3 may suite you.

You MUST buy a mixer or pre-amp to bring the level of the signal up enough to record.

A DI alone will NOT do it.

Ok I forgot to mention. It is an electric guitar, and I do run it through a preamp pedal that's designed to be plugged in direct into PA systems and such. It sounds amazing right now actually, going into my SBLive, and from SBLive into a hi fi stereo, the signal is definitely hot enough. I've recorded before and it sounds amazing.

I'm getting the Behringer DI box just for its stack speakers emulation.

So... given this clarification... Do you guys know if I can go thru the Beh box's XLR out, and still have stellar quality?

Hmm I think I read somewhere that XLR is basically microphone output.... Would it work if I use a XLR > 1/8 and into the mic input of the soundblaster?

THANKS A LOT GUYS!
