Anybody can create anything they want, and it's all legitimate art. Nevertheless, I think it's safe to say there is bad art and good art. And who gets to decide? Well.... me of course. And ...you of course. I see and hear art I think is really really good, and sometimes I see stuff that is total crap. I don't see anything wrong with calling it that way I see it. At the same time, I don't see any reason to make my opinions personal or hurtful to the artist, although it can be really hard to seperate the two. People almost always take it personally when people trash something they worked hard on. But if you want to be an artist, it's all part and parcel of the gig, so develop a thick skin. You put a piece of yourself in your creation and put it out there for people to respond to. If you're not prepared for that, be a plumber.
When you're talking about famous artist, you kind of have this distance thing that makes you more extreme in your criticisms. So people get really mean, and then somebody gets offended not because they created it, but only becuase they like it and somebody else didn't. That's just wasting your feelings on something really unimportant.
