question about using two mics on the same channel/track

my four track recorder only has one input for a mic, so i was just wondering how it would sound if i used a splitter so that i could plug two mics into the same input and record them onto the same track simutaniously, would this hurt the recorder or the mics at all? would i be able to get a decent signal from both mics or would it just all turn to mud?

You can get a decent signal, but placement and some sort of mic selection will be critical.

you certainly wont get a stereo imaging if that is what you are trying to get, but try to get a pre-amp and you can use the 1/4" channels

You can use a mixer and plug all the mics you want into one chanel, they will still all be on one track but yes you can do it.

It really wouldn't benefit you to use two mic's.


You won't get a stereo image and you'll end up having to fight with the EQ response of each mic put together in one big nasty ball of sound.

thanks for all of the advise, .. i was just pretty much trying to "cheat the system" with my four track so i coulkd squeeze more instruments into one tape without bouncing, . i was thinking about maybe recording bass and the rhythm guitar onto one track, or the vocals and guitar,

No reason it wont work, but it will just be a lot more tricky, as you cant make changes later, but it's just the same as recording an entire band live to stereo takes some different doin' than multitracking everything or using overdubs.
