Where have you had the most affect on your sound? I mean, where on the head, which side, which head, etc.?

I use them on both heads usualy towards the outside. Really depends on the sound youre looking for...

I use them sparingly. When I do use them, on my 12 and 13" toms, right on the edge against the rim. On my 16 and 18, I'll put them about an inch in from the rim.

I didn't use them for years - until one day when I really sat and messed with them, and realized - they do wonders for my kit.

I use 2 on my tom, both on the outside edge, one at 12:00 , the other at 6:00. I use 1 on my floor tom, at 6:00. (Closest to me). And I use one on the snare - outside edge, 6:00. (again, closest to me)

I think using one on the snare must be similar to how Ringo Starr used to keep his pack of smokes sitting there while recording.

I just like the deader, dry drum sounds, personally.

They are very good things to have.

I often use them on the resonator heads on all of my toms to keep that damned ringing you sometimes get in a session. Occasionally I use them on the tom heads, but rarely. I never use them on my snare cause they get in the way of the brushes. I also like my snare to be very clean and crisp.

Naturally it depends on what you think the drum sound needs. I use them on all my batter heads (normally 1 on the snare and on the 10" and 12" toms and 2 on the 14" and 16" toms. I may use gels on the resonant heads (other than snare) when recording - but only if I'm having a specific problem.

On the batter head the placement is always within 1" of the rim - on the resonant head....whatever works.
