I'm going to do some recording and the only monitoring system I have is a home stereo. I know I should have "studio monitors" But I just can't afford them right now. To get the truest sound should I set all the eq's on the stereo to flat?

Thanks,

If it's all you have to work with...

Definately set your EQ flat. I'll probably be miles away from a flat responce so when you think you've got it right, burn a copy and cross reference it on as many different sound systems as you can. It's a pain, but it's a work around till you get yourself some decent monitors.

Alec.

Yep, keep the eq flat. I did the same thing for over a year. Then I got some real Monitors. But it worked for me.

Another thing you can do is Listen to some of your favorite CDs (reference CDs) through your computer, then through your stereo (with the EQ flat) . If your mixes sound close to what your reference CD sounds like then you are good to go.

It will save you money on burning a bunch of CDs and trying them out on different systems.

Good Luck.

Yup.

I'd have to agree with everyone on this one, flat EQ is the way to go. Now about "studio monitors"? I have a different outlook to speakers then most, I use what works for me whether it's a "studio monitor" or not. To me good speakers are good speakers.

Good luck,

Actually you know what I think is a bigger issue than the EQ on cheap speakers? Distortion. I remember hearing some tracks I had done on proper monitors for the first time and was surprised as hell at the amount of distortion going on that I just couldn't hear on my home stereo speakers.

You may have a point but....

That may very well be but how good where the speakers you were using in the first place before you "studio monitors"?

There is a big difference between good stereo speakers and bad "stereo speakers/hi-fi" as there are with good and bad "studio monitors", right? I seem to think so anyway.
