Question about Mixer, amp and Passive speaker.

Hello, I have a quick question about a amp that I need.

I currently have a behringer pmp5000 mixer that I use to practice with my band.

I just bought 2 Behringer Eurolive VS1220F Stage Monitor.

I want to use them as monitors but I was told that I need an AMP for them to work, I don't want to spend a lot of money on the amp. I was looking for something bet $100 - $150.

First question, any recomendations?

My second question is, I was lloking at the amp's pictures and the out they use is that round cable (like powered) connection but the monitors that I bought come with 1/4 input (like the ones in the guitar) is there a converter or am I missing something here?

Looks like your mixer is powered (built in amp). So the main outs should hook right into the ins on your monitors. Check your manuals but those should be balanced ins and outs so you need a TRS cable.

I think the only powered outputs are the ones in the back (they use this kind of cable http://prolight.co.uk/item/cabl21/ ) every other output (like monitor output) I need an amp.

The cable you saw was probably a speaker cable rather than an instrument cable, which is probably what you are used to seeing. Don't quote be on this, but I *think* you need to use a speaker cable when plugging into passive speakers so power can be transferred down the line. You can research that and look around this forum to be sure.

First do you have a user's manual for the mixer.If not i suggest downloading one from their site.You may have a lot more options for running this mixer more effectively.

If it is a powered mixer you can usually do several things.You could use the power of the mains to power your monitors and use the L/R line outs(if you have them and you should be able to bypass the power section of a powered mixer)to run your mains.But then you would still need a power amp for your main speakers.

If you only have main and monitor outs and are already using the main outs it looks like you'll need an amp to run the monitors.Either way you'll still need a power amp and you'll have to have an amp that's powerful enough to do the job.Use an instrument cable to connect to the power amp.Then speaker cables from that amp to the speakers.



I had a 500 watt powered mixer and was able to re-route the power section and built in eq to my monitor outs.I then used the main L/R line outs to power my actual main speakers using more powerful amps.This also gave me the options of using an outboard crossover,a compressor/gate and a 31 band eq for the main speakers.

To use the mixer (and its own power amp) with the monitors, you need a cables with Speakon connectors one end and 1/4 plugs the other end.

Alternatively, you can use the monitors sends on the desk, which will then need to go to a separate amp, which would then connect to the speakers.

I have a powered Behringer mixer with only Speakon outputs and JBL speakers that use 1/4" plugs, so I have the same situation.

What I did was buy Speakon plugs for the Behringer and some 1/4" Neutrik plugs and then about 50' of lamp wire from Ace Hardware - voilà speaker cables. Way cheaper than store bought.

Another alternative if you already have some 1/4" to 1/4" speaker cables is to buy some adapters like these http://www.google.com/products/cata...log_result&ct=image&resnum=4&ved=0CDsQ8gIwAw#
The only trouble with those is that they stick out the back real far and they're easy to damage.

That describes plan A.

My Plan B was to replace all my 1/4 socks with Speakons. That way I no longer have to worry about adapters and so on. Speakons are safer and easier to work with than 1/4 jacks or XLRs.

If you are using the Speakon outputs for your mains, then yes, you will need a power amp for the monitors.

So you would then hook up a cable between mixer's aux sends (usually 1/4 sockets) to the amp's inputs (XLR), and connect the speakers to the amp via the amp's speakon connectors.
