Hi,
An informal group would like to record themselves practicing (will never do serious work).
I have a JVC CD/MD recorder (powered by an audio receiver) that can mix line/CD/mic (we only want to record the quartet live to listen to playback). The recorder has a 1/4 inch jack. We want to keep it simple, use what we have if able, and have a $200 budget.
I can only find two battery operated mics in our price range: Shure PG81 and Rode M3. Since both are closely priced, I wondered which would be best, as a single mic, for recording a string quartet, and a solo violin?
I read in HomeRecording.com that "SDC" is better than a dynamic for this purpose, and I don't want to mess with phantom power, unless required, so that's why the battery.
I'll start recording by trying to hang the mic from above into the center of the quartet, about 6 feet off the ground.
I would appreciate your opinions.... Thanks.
