Meh...
I'm working on a punk version of Hall & Oates "Out of Touch". I haven't recorded the vocals yet, but I'd like to get your thoughts on how the mix stands so far and if anything needs adjusting, etc. Ignore the ending, I'm going to have it fade out when I finish it.

Out of Touch

Thanks,
Garry

Cool, I'd like to hear some more low end on the kick, and maybe a bit less snare overall. The bass gets a little drown out by the snare. So, yeah, more low end would be better.

The drums could stand to be a bit less compressed. They seem too sedate. Punk should be more boisterous.

The mix sounds good overall on a MacBook with K-240 Mk II headphones. It will be interesting to hear this with the vocals.

Meh, it's okay. Here's my critiques:

Drums too roomy. They need to be tighter, punchier, more kick.
Bass too boomy. Needs more attack. Tighter picking sound. Less low end.
Guitars have too much gain. I'd like em a little cleaner. Just a little. No reverb or delay. Drop em down some.

Okay, here's a different mix based off the critiques. Let me know what you think: MIX 2

Yup, way better. I'm still not crazy about the bass tone, but whatever. It seems too scooped in the mids.

This sounds better. I'd still like the drum attacks to be not as well-behaved, if that makes any sense. The dynamics of the vocals may change my opinion. The instrumental alone sounds too polished. The track needs some parts that break out of the box, so to speak.

Yeah, I'll try messing with the bass eq more, but I think I won't be able to get it any better because of the tone I used when tracking it. I might just rerecord the bass, eh... no I won't. Fuck it. It's just a cover of a shitty song anyway. haha

I know what you mean. Punk doesn't exactly scream "polished" performances, but I think I can definitely make up for that with the vocals. haha

2nd mix is definitely better. Don't know the song, but I like how it's sounding so far. I always thought their Can't go for that was a great tune

LOVE the idea, but I'm gonna wait for the version with vocals- and I gotta say, I am REALLY looking forward to it. This should be HILARIOUS!

Guess I'm the minority, I liked the 1st mix better. probably cause the guitars were louder haha... The second mix sounds more compressed to me, which in the mixing sense should work better overall (even/level/etc). Looking forward to vocals....

Nice song choice. H&O, great songwriters.

Bass sounds girlie. Dial the mids back in, get some click and attack. Sounds like bad Metallica bass. Playing is good though. Can't be ascared of mids on bass for punk. I think it should sound like a small amp trying to get all the volume it can, like Jack Bruce. My opinion only. Playing was tight.

Guitars could come up.
Can't wait for vocals. :)

Nice. Thanks.

Thanks for the comments / suggestions guys. I'm waiting for my cold to clear up before I record vocals... but maybe I shouldn't; it is punk after all.

Yeah, go ahead and sneeze and slobber all over the mic- that's what a REAL punk would do...

Hey it's Epitaph late 90's "Punk-O-Rama" comp style punk! Next time I'll do a TSOL cover...

Second mix is better but the bass is still too boomy in my opinion. Overall though, I think you did a great job.
