Hi i have a few questions to ask.
First off, a friend and I have a good amount of instrumental songs, (hip-hop, r&b) written with the intention of having someone rap or sing over them.
im going to try to collect my thoughts to ask questions, they might be a little confusing.
1. what are some good ways to get into the business like that. for example how timbaland writes for a lot of different artists. how might his deals be worked out? does he sell the beats flat out or...

2. if i signed a contract with a publishing company with my instrumentals and they found vocalsits how does copyright work with that.

3. if i "sold" them the beat, and the agreement is for them to record the vocals in my studio, they write the vocals, how does copyright work for that.

4. if i form a record company, in a sense where i record the artist and do other services, would i use my publisher to promote them if the publisher would except them.

im a little confused and probably not making any sense but your answers with help me form my questions better. thanks

goroomstudio,

Gently now - you're not only a little confused, you're industry ignorant. Unfortunately, that is a common problem in the music industry. It shouldn't be that way, but unfortunately, it is.

You might find the information contained in the website http://www.vmgworldwide.com/fullsite.htm helpful to you and your endeavors. It should help you form your questions better and it should help you understand the answers.

The idiot element will probably have a case of the ass that I recommended the site, but I couldn't help but notice that none of them had any advice/recommendations/suggestions for you.

Yo,
there are plenty of websites offering up very similar info as the link posted above. There are also plenty of threads in the marketing your music forum that can also direct you to some websites & maybe answer some of your questions. You've asked some pretty big questions that cover a whole lot of territory - A lot for anyone to address in one post.

I have sent you a PM with some other links to check out, pointers to some books, and my 2 cents worth regarding your questions. Maybe that'll help you a bit, too. There are people around here who can help you out far better than me, maybe they'll chime in.

good luck.
