Here's my shot. I did this late at night, so it probably sucks. Let's see what I think of it in the morning.

Never mixed this type of stuff before, and I had no reference material available.
After doing so poorly last time around, I'm stumped on balance. I'd rather not be the kind of engineer that needs 5 test mixes to get it right. I need to be able to get it right the first or second time. I'll never make money if it takes 10 hours to mix a four minute song. Hopefully, this is better.
Oh...
Awesome guitar playing, and real tight performance!

the guitars and bass were nicely balanced.
The kick and snare are both buried.
Slap some 2 and 8k in and pull some 300hz out of that kick and then compress it. Moderate attack, fast release.

The snare was buried as well add some 5 and 10 k then reverb and then compress.
The vox were also IMO way too up front.
In metal your goal is to have them sit "in" the track.
the rest sounded dandy though! :)

Nice work caryindy.

Here is my submission. I used to play this type of stuff in the late 80s but never mixed it. So this was/is a learning experience. Thank you.

The global gating was cool, as was the doubled vox stuff.
Good balance.
Thin guitars. Needs 100 hz.

Its a good mix overall dc.

Let me know what you think.
.

Too much bass guitar.
The bass is better felt than heard in this music.
Guitars were thin.
Drums were ok, the bass drum needs more attack in it.

The guitars were a bit fuzzy, and lacked in the beef department.
Too much prominent bass guitar in the mix.
Drums were cool but id like more bass presence or (ka-thud) in the toms and kick.
All those things combined made the songs stereo image seem very smeared sounding to me.

I hope I finish downloading the files before the comp closes!

I knew it was bass heavy, did that on pupose, but "not enough attack in the bass drum"?

I doubled up the track, boosted the click quite a bit, and used ZERO compression. I felt it had way more attack than your version. How could I get "more attack"?

Thanks,

NL5

I compared the two.
IMHO I feel like my bass drum cuts through the mix better because it has more attack. i.e. snap, click, pop etc...
I got it by adding 8k to it and compressing it.
when you say you doubled it...did you keep them in mono or pan them both hard?
known as "Big Mono".

Since quite a few of us are using Finster's mix as a reference point due to the fact that we are unfamiliar with this style of music ,could you please critique his mix for us? I believe that this would be a valuable tool for us since this style is very different.

If youd like to see the critiqes of my mix go back a few pages in the mp3 clinic directories ocnor.
The thread name is "Number 11"

A request.

It would be cool to see someone besides my self critiqueing the mixes that are posted.

Ocnor brings up a good point. Were only seeing pretty much one point of view right now, because im the only one trying to run around and point out what "i" see wrong so maybe you can make it right.
But of course these are just opinions from 1 person.
I think more improvement could be made if more contestants listen and critiqed each other.

Also. I made a mistake by even posting my mix as any kind of "reference".
Just do what sounds right to you. Who knows? Maybe my mix totally blows and you shouldnt take it too seriously.

Point is, id like to see the contestants help each other out.
Im no better than any of the mixers here in this forum, far worse than some, who probably dont even enter cause they would just annihalate everybody.

Maybe it would be best if i just started my mix over again, and entered the contest???

Thanks Finster.
I can't believe that the guitars were done with Amplitube. I would have bet money that it was a Mesa Quad or Rectum fryer. I tried that plugin once and the best that I could get was the sound of a swarm of angry digital bees in a glass jar. I would be very interrested in the settings that you used if you would care to share them. Also what type of guitar did you use?

I used these settings on the plug...

http://www.geomana.com/~new_audio/Fx setting.jpg

Then i compressed it with this....

http://www.geomana.com/~new_audio/sshot_big_ren_comp01-1.jpg

Then i used this to make it sound real...

The guitar is a Epiphone Gothic V with emg 81 in the bridge and emg 85 in the neck as the pickups.

Peace.

Btw. my server is glitching a bit this morning so be patient, thanx. :)

Thanks for your comments Finster. I just remembered I muted all the tom mics and haven't gotten to those yet. They're relatively minor in the song so I'll tackle them once I get everything else right.

Here's an updated version, this time actually done on my monitors. I mixed the last one on headphones *runs and hides* :p

I'm trying to go for a Studio Fredman (In Flames et al) sound.

I think I put too much verb on the snare. It's apparent during the rhytmic guitar parts. However, I'm getting too much presence on the snare - it's too much like it's right in the room (one of my biggest criticisms about 99% of home rec mixes), so I'll have to play around more. This is a fun contest.

EDIT: I made another mix which I think fixes the snare a little. I also played around with some other stuff.

EDIT: skip mix 6, let's go to 7...
