Public Mix Contest #11 !!!!!!

i'm a latecomer, and will be away for next week at a conference, but i'll be posting my first pass (beta mix?) later in the day--gotta take it for a drive first. ;)

not to toot my own horn, but i do like what i've done with the vocals so far--like kainz said, i'm not sure that the mic (or room) was the best one for him, but that's what makes these things fun. :D

i like what i've heard from y'all so far too.....there's some stiff competition here FO SHO.

I just downloaded the tracks and did my first mix last nite. This is the first one of these contests I've done, and man do I wish I would have done this earlier. I had a great time doing the initial mix. I'm going to let it sit with me for a few days before I submit it.

Thanks to mshilarious, xfinsterx, and nl5 for doing this. Lots of fun!
 
God, these things are fun...

First off... I have been a huge fan of these PMC's since the first one!! Thanks so much to everyone who takes time to track, organize, distribute and judge these things. It's a very cool thing you have done, and many people appreciate your efforts...

That said, I have mixed a few of these, and learned a bunch, but never submitted anything... Always seems I ran out of time....

So, here's my first submission... Click Here... Feel free to critique.... objectivity and suggestions for improvement are always appreciated...

I think the most important thing I learned is that you should never ask your wife for input, unless you're willing to start over.... :D

Now, IMO, I'm starting to be so finished (and bored to hell) with this track that I can almost call this as my final one.

Please give it a shot and tell me if there is anything that more or less disturbs you! :eek:

Good morning Mr. Kainz....

I listened to your mix.....

First, I really liked the overall mix alot... good balance...

BUT, I really hate (and this is not specific to your mix) the way the distorted guitars sound, and felt they had no place in a song like this. (and this comes from an 80's metalhead!! :D )

I also didn't like the arrangment of the intro.

I think if you muted the 2 distorted gtrs, (NOT the lead), you'd have a great mix...

Jest my opinion.... YMMV... :D :D
 
Quick question about judging...

If no one critiques your submission with 24 hours, is it safe to assume that is was "perfect", and there was nothing to improve??

I'm looking good then!!! ;)

Seriously though, is there a way to delete/update a post(submission) to that www.lightningmp3.com site?? I am hosting my own file, but thought I needed to submit through that site... I wanted to update the file... Oh well...

The one HERE (on my site) is the one...

i feel essentially the same way......my mix will be up this coming weekend--i'm out of town and didn't get a mix that i thought was good enough to compete (let alone post as "working") before i left. i won't say much more lest i give away too much, but suffice it to say that i don't think the 2 dist guitars fit the song at all.

i guess we get to play producer too, eh? i wish i'd gotten involved in these things a LOT earlier. :D

Hmh, you really hear those distortions somewhere else than in those choruses and intro? They are there and even then they are veeeeeeery low. This really doesn't "tell" anything but they are around -36db.
 
I know i dont have a chance to win, but it was still really fun mixing this song. Tell me what you all think of mine. I tried to keep it mildly simple, but there was just alot you could do with it. I think this is the best mix ive gotten so far, although im not completely satisfied with it. I just couldnt get the toms to sound right, and i ended up adding way too much low end.

oh yea..and im monitoring with decent computer speakers...but they're hooked up weird, so only one works when im in acid pro, but then when i listen to it with media player they seem to work for some reason.

 
i redid the mix...i dont think the other was working anyways. Either way, i think this is gunna be my final one.



give me some feedback on it please..i think i did pretty good for this being my first time doing sometihn like this. (all i usually do is my own stuff too)

I agree. I think there was WAY too much time allotted for this. A week, two maybe at most?

But then a lot of people won't have time to enter.. eh.

MEH. Oh well. I still have fun doing it.

I suppose some future mix contest could be something like "put up your best mix within 24 hours" (or whatever time limit). That would really put your basic mixing skills, and especially your workflow, to the test.

This has kind of dragged on, hasn't it. Maybe long enough for me to try again? :)
