B. Sabbath - thank you. I'd be very grateful for more detail if you could - I'm trying to learn as much as I can about recording and mixing, so any tips would be really useful.

Erland's original was only a few cents flat (from A=440Hz) so it wasn't a huge pitch shift. Even so, the artifacts are definitely audible. It just seemed easier than re-tuning my guitars!

Cheers

I thought the "harris' version had some sound quality problems...like noise reduction artifacts...like in the beginning, but had some neat additions... especially the vocals. the ld gtr licks were kinda stiff sounding.

the alibish version seemed sonically better to me, but was very 'gentle' with the additions. careful not to trod on the original.

personally, I thought both versions added to the original of erlands...each in their own way.

the erland version, on its own is decent, but gets very repetitive to me after a minute or so. mainly due to the same strumming pattern and 'main' chord it seems to hang on. needs a bridge in a big way...or some other sections, like interludes, intros, outros, ..etc..
good singing and performing on erlands part, but the song TO ME is very simplistic and needs some ear candy to not be the same from beginning to end. unfortunately, I am one of those people that the lyrics aren't JUST enough to do it for me. I think all of erlands songs [in disagreement with many here, I am sure] need some production pizazz to spruce them up and get them out of the league of a casette recording sitting on a pno top....kinda a raw demo feel. yeah..there are dbl tracked gtrs and over dubbed vocals, but the effect of the recording TO ME is still, one vocal track, one guitar.

just wanted to say i like both versions. maybe we need a new assignment of reproducing your favorite erland song in 1.65 hours? what is it about this guy that makes us all want to sing along......it's his gift.

i agree with mixmkr that the tune gets a little tired on it's own and definitely needs the extras, although i don't think that of all Erland's music. Most of his music I think is perfect as is.

were either of you around these parts when mixmkr redid 'many years from now'? that's still amoung my favorites from this board.

I haven't had the pleasure

mixmkr - thanks very much. I was careful not to overwhelm the orginal - maybe too careful. I love Erland's voice, and I didn't want to spoil it.

I know what you mean about Erland's stuff in general, but personally I love the stripped-back, bare bones sound. Such a good voice, and I think his writing is strong too. It's like PJ Harvey's 4-track demos - cool precisely because they're so simple.

But with this track specifically, I totally agree that it needed something more to introduce some light and shade.

erichenryus - thank you. And good to hear from you again. By the way, I've made some changes to "Not The Only One", including sorting out the volume on the drum track. There's so much cool stuff in there I hadn't heard before - lots of wee rolls, etc. Very nice. I'll post it soon.

Cheers

ok, i just remembered that i offered you a drum track on another tune also. ooooooopppps. sorry about that, i was in the middle of my promise to Lt. Bob for the last four months lol.

again, i liked both yours and chrisharris' editions of this song. i especially liked the bass guitar on both and background vocals. it would be cool if someone offered to play a real acoustic bass full time for erland i think.

i like the shaker better than the tamborine :). just personal taste though.

glad to have you back around these parts alibish.

Commentary

Not sure whether to comment on the mix or the arrangements ......

Alibish -

Overall, I liked the arrangment. The additional acoustic sounds good. The organ works well - although, I would prefer to hear more of it in both speakers .... to fatten it up a bit. The tamborine also works well; simple and effective. I didn't care for the shaker. It seemed out of place and too hot in the mix. No opinion good/bad on the bass other than it helped the overall song. I liked how you built up the arrangment as the song progressed.

Chris -

Enjoyed the background vocals - added to the "eerieness" of the song. I think a warm synth pad, doubling the background vocals would be nice. The acoustic guitar work was very nice. Hated the tamborine. Too busy and sounds clunky. Also didn't like how the tamborine was "doubled" in the other speaker.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think an arrangement/mix along the lines of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" would be good for this tune. Not necessarily a big orchestra production, but, you know the way BOTW builds - and plenty of reverb (e.g. that big snare). I'm not normally a reverb fan, but I think it would work well with supporting instruments in this song.

BPOCO - all IMHO

eric - don't worry about the percussion track - I'm going to try it myself, with shaker. And maybe some tambourine too...

bpoco - thank you for the comments. I'll try making the organ a bit "bigger".

Sorry you didn't like the shaker - maybe I should make it a bit quieter, and put a bit more reverb on it. It's quite "up front" just now. Maybe it's too far to the side as well?

Anyway, glad you liked some bits in both mine and chris' attempts. For me the strongest part of both versions (surprise, surprise) is Erland's voice. :)

erichenryus. As always you say the best and most encouraging things to me. So thankyou for everything!

bpoco. Thanks for the great reply to this thread. Ablisha and Chris did an amzing thing to this song and I respect that a lot. I would love to add a really big backing one day.

I cant stand that Erland guy. To me the voice does my nut after a few minutes or when I hear a little mistake. Will that ever go away?

Anyway. You guys are the best so big thanks!

LOL... :D

"does my nut"??? :D :p

I am totally gonna start incorporating your figures of speech into my daily vocabulary... of course, everyone will think I'm crazy... :p but what do I care.... :D

how's this...?

Man,.. I am so chuffed... every time you say that, it does my nut.

I'm pretty sure that if I said that to an American girl, I'd get slapped.... (or "gobsmacked" even) :p

:D :D :D

Hey guys,
These are both really cool interpretations of Erland's tune. I listened to Alibish's version this time.... also very very nice. I like the keys.
What is interesting is the different directions you guys took the tune in. ...nice picture of where youre coming from. Very nice work from both of you. I'll bet this was alot of fun.

guernica - thank you very much. It was fun to do stuff with someone else's tune - like taking a break from the real work of your own stuff!

watyf - there's so many brilliant Scottish-isms. You should come over for a holiday some time. We've got about 500 words for being drunk. Kind of like the Inuits and snow, I suppose. :)

Cheers
