King of Bling
Okay, our buddy Cooper ("Erland") is obviously having some trouble accessing the internet. But he did a song that I think is just great; then "Alibish" and I took the song and added stuff seperately. We haven't heard back from Erland yet, and all of the "1.5 hour tunes" kinda' bumped his thread off the front page. If you haven't done so yet, I think all 3 of us would appreciate some feedback on the respective mixes.

Thanks, if you have the time.

Of course I'm predisposed to dig anything Erland's had his hand in. The basic Erland like all of his tunes stands on its own very well. They sound like complete songs despite their simplicity. The Alibish version is very cool and adds another demension but with all due respect, I must say your take is another step up again. Both versions are killer.

Wow...I really like this song, whichever version.

Good stuff.

Thanks Track Rat. I know it's a pain in the ass when the board's moving at the speed of light like this...Asking someone to listen to 3 versions of the same song is just... Well, it's rude. But I'm allowed to be rude on Saturdays. No other days, but Saturdays are okay.

Jagular - I agree... "Erland's" the bomb. Thanks for taking the time to help out.

ANYBODY ELSE??

I will listen to all of these later. I'm going to pick for a couple hours.

Later,

I've followed this song alot.. I'm downloading it again as I type this.. I'm a huge fan or Erland's work and your as well. I'll have a comparison in a few minutes...

Alibash's version.. I'm diggin the organ and the shaker, bass guitar is seriously rocking - very VERY nice playing.. smoothe too-I like that, and the lead guit. in the intro.. very nice.

Chris, your version.. sound a little bit busy for me.. I like the tamborine. nice touch.. subtle but rhythmic. the Bass is a little heavy IMO.. but the VOX are stellar.. that's an excellent sound you got with those backups! I wanted to hear the lower harmony a little farther back .. but it's all good man. What the hell am I criticizing you for.. this shit ROCKS!.. ok.. that's my take on it.

Roger That!! I took some of the guitar fills out, and lowered the bass a couple of db's. This is a tough one, b/c neither Alibish nor I have the individual tracks, which means that in order to roll the lows off the guitars to make them sit better with the bass, we necesarily have to pull lows out of the vocal too...and I don't wanna' mess with Erland's voice...so getting the bass to sit correctly is KILLING me, which is why your input is so valuable; I appreciate your taking the time to do that.

I should have a new mix up in :20, for anybody else that's interested.

thanks if you can.

I like cris's version best but they are all so good...
Alibash's organ and guitar tone is awesome but cris' bass and guit performance is better....

I must have your old mix cris...bass is booming....your guit could use some more Volume and warmth...in the little fill sections....

I really like this tune....
mostly due to the passion of the Vox....

one of those vocal performances that just shoots up your spine....ya know?

Man this is good stuff....

OK..it's official...Joro's ears are fried....so much for recording tonight....

*sips Crown Hi-Ball* :D

Nice stuff from all of you. Backing vocals Chris are so good. Nice work all.
I want to see Erland play live.

Yeah, Joro...I JUST NOW got the new one uploaded, but it's basically the same...just imagine what you heard..only with a PERFECT bass level...LOL. (My ears are fried too, which is why your help is much appreciated).

bobbo - no kidding. I have a feeling that he sounds even better live.

listening now.. I like it better now.. Idunno what I was bitching about really on the last mix.. the new Bass level is befinitely better IMO.. there's just a few heavy places where it resonates a bit I.E. @ 1:08 .. and maybe a few other similar places.. I'm listenign on a system with a sub though. Maybe that's why I hear the bass a little more critically. well.
I still want the lower harmony/backing vox down a bit in a few places.. but I can deal (It's not my place to be so goddamn critical.. sorry about that...lol :D) Nice mix man.. get ahold of the trax from Erland and make it rock even better.. it's gold IMO.. I guess the reason I'm so anal about the bass is that I just want to hear an upright sound I guess.. or a fretless bass in the same style... I just think that it would feel better on Erland's tune..
Good Job!

ZPphreak - No, you're totally right. The freakin' bass is just giving me fits...when I compress it the way I really want to, I'm getting WAY too much finger noise, so I'm trying to level it out with volume panning...but I just listened again, and it's obnoxiously loud still.

I'm cutting it by another 6db and reposting in an hour...but dude, you have done MORE than your part...LOL. Don't feel compelled to listen again. The main thing about this song is that that VOICE of Cooper's needs to be sitting very big on top.

As far as the low harmony, I hear you...I fucked it up tho and mixed it already with the other harmony, so unless I resing it, I'm stuck with it....God I need a bigger hard drive....(that's what SHE said!!!)

No, it's cool I'm on the PC all day doing shit work.. so listening to these mixes is kindof a break for me.. feedback is the least I can do.. besides, I need to be thinking more analyticaly if I ever want my mixes to turn out decent.

Well, it's official. I am clinically insane. I decided to just retrack the bass with a different EQ going in. I'm done. If it sucks, it sucks...LOL. It's weird, but working on somebody ELSE'S tunes makes me want to do better than working on my own crap. (see "1.5 hr. Profanity Song," for example... :D).

Anyway, if you read this Erland, understand that all Alibash or I want is to do your tune justice. As usual, your pared down version totally stands on its own as is. But I think you may want to compile a few of your songs in a collection someday, and anything you can do to make the tunes sound different from each other, while still maintaining your signature sound, is a good thing...I think. Collaborations are great for that...or they have been for me, anyway. Of course, this isn't so much a collaboration as it was a highjacking and kidnap job, but still... :D

Thanks for those of you that have taken (or will take) the time to listen.

My last one until I hear from THE MAN, is here:

Hello...

Haven't been on the board for awhile :( ... but very cool to come back to some great music!

Listened to Erland's recording first ... excellent on it's own for sure. It is such a beautiful song that it completely works on its own. Great lyrics and excellent singing. :)

Next listened to Alibash's version. I like the use of the shaker and I thought the organ really brought it to a new place. Nice work. The guitar was a nice touch as well in a subtle kind of way. Nice job all around.

Then listened to Chris version...The song is becoming more full as you go on. I like the bass but feel like it might be mixed a little bit to far back ... ah, but when those vocals come in that is great! They are excellent and really bring this song to life (as if it wasn't already, it makes it even better)...What a great collaboration and hearing all three in a row you really hear how it was built! Even though this was an "un-authorized" collaboration, so to speak, you guys have really done justice to this song! I'm tired, and have nothing bad to say at this time! :)

Okay, now what is all this 1.5 stuff .... :)

Chris - thanks for posting this. It's good to get some feedback. By the way, you probably noticed that Erland has replied to the original thread. The man from Del Monte, he say "Yes"!

(I hope you got that advert in North America, otherwise no-one will have any idea what I'm talking about...)

Track Rat - thanks for the compliment. Chris's vocal additions are just brilliant - way out of my league!

Jagular - cheers.

ZPphreak - thank you very much. I'm not a bass player, but I was pleased with the way this one turned out.

Joro - thanks re the guitar and organ. I'm glad you liked the organ, because I really wasn't sure about the sound. In fact I buried it in chorus just in case!

bobbo - cheers.

boyrj - thank you. That's the first time I've played or recorded percussion, so I was quite pleased.

Erland has such a cool voice, and writes such cool songs, that only a complete idiot could have mucked this up. But despite that, it looks like neither me nor Chris actually did. Weird. ;)

Cheers

AB

Hey Chris,
......very nice man. Im listening to your version, I'll hit up Alibish's a little later, but i will hit it.......all these 1.5's gotta be tended to:D . ..damn dial-up.

The first thing that i want to do when i hear this is take some of the high end off of Erlands voice. ...I know you cant do that. I like what youve done as far as warming it up..... I like the bass, and the bg vocs......... very nice man!! That falsetto back there is killer.........I really like that! Your addition has made this kinda surreal..... .....it fits nicely........ Nice work bro!

I'll be back:)
g

all the versions were cool.. both of the new ones had pros and cons..

I liked chris's better mainly because of the guitar additions..

alibish - pretty ballsy move pitchshifting the whole thing! :D
