Giving away free ringtones is is the best new trick I have found to promote our band.
I use mycellspot.com to make ringtone and post thier ringtone app to our website so I can share my ringtones with our fans.
Give it a try every little bit helps and it is fun too!!

Check out Tune core, pretty cheap, you keep 100% of royalties goes to Itunes, amazon Mp3, napster etc.

I dropped myspace for musicians as well. Why don't you try broadjam? If you can get enough people to listen to your songs on there, you can get bumped to the top ten in your genre. That will get you some visibility!

I use SoundCloud only...

That said,
1ST, you have to have the goods and a track record of producing them. While online marketing is the wave of the future, billboards, bus stop bench adds, flyers, radio time, ball caps, T-shirts, App. displays and the traditional media exploits coupled with a very creative, savvy publicist might get you a cup of coffee and a banana today in the music business.

Mind you, I'm not at all cynical nor, am I pesimistic about the music industry. I'm actually a realist. It's over. The music industry with all it's glamour and glitz is over for the most part. If you are no where with your music today, a grassroots aproach is your only alternative to "growing" your business. Be prepared to invest every last dime in yourself/your band on a local level first.

The music icons of the past will remain in the past and the present and future of the business will be unrecognisable in comparison. "Going viral" with your music happens, well, overnight. So if you're not totally prepared for colosal success, you won't recognize it when it looks you in the face.

It's not about the social music networks. They'll do nothing for you. They'll only reflect the good luck and success you're having due to great contacts and, a gifted talent you possess.

Success really does happen over night. But not without a lot of planing, good luck, contacts, doing your homework and foot work ahead of time.

These are different times we're living in. The days of The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson and all the music icons are over. Every music phenonomenon is unique and there's no "silver bullet" or standard formula for success. Especially in the music business.

If you're in the music business as an artist to get wealthy, you picked the wrong profession. But if you can move people's emotions with your music, you picked the right profession.

Just don't spam. If you own a website, you optimize your site. The question is how to promote traffic?
Its another story, but as explained above, you can buy some banners and target sites with the same audience. There are also many people looking for beat and music makers in yahoo community. (you can promote your site there because its seems many people are advertising there)

doesn't soundcloud have a lot of electronic music. I would like to find a site where there is more rock/pop music than electronic music.

Soundcloud is 6mil strong. If you can't find your chosen genre, you're not looking past your nose bro.

Start sending out emails to blogs, blogs like nahright, have helped promote artists with basically no reputation to stardom, and hundreds of thousands of downloads.

not that im disagreeing with you but these could be seen as anomalies rather than the norm

certainly with that Friday track...I wonder how much $$$ she'll receive from it all and if the negative view of the song has all but killed any chance of a career in the industry at such a young age, would it have been worth it for her in the long term??

My answer is... TOTALLY, YES! Yea, it would be worth it. Her parents seemed halfway intelligent by paying for the recording and then getting the record company (as long as I have my story straight). So, assuming they hired a somewhat decent lawyer, even after giving the record company their cut, and the lawyer, she should still have enough money to put her through college. I heard the recording of 'Friday' was payed up front by the family so that expense shouldn't come out of the earnings.

If they were smart, even if that was the end of her career, she could still be set for life.

Dude, don't be so dumb. Stay on track here. That shit aint pop music. That's "indie" acoustic singer/songwriter stuff, which is a whole 'nother realm of suck. My wife listens to that crap. But at least those guys pay attention to songwriting and playing instruments and interesting recording techniques. I don't like that wimpy kind of man-purse hipster music, but I can respect what goes into it. I can't say the same for top-40 radio pop garbage.

P.S. - I am closed-minded, and wear it proudly. I'm sorry if I don't float around grooving like a retard to any shit put in front of me just so I can pretend to be enlightened and open-minded. I'm skeptical, cynical, and if lots of people like something, it can't be any good. Because again, people in general are stupid.

LMFAO ROTFL!!!:laughings:

Man purse hipster music! :laughings:

EDIT: The only artists from this realm I enjoy are Dashboard Confessionals and Damien Rice. I LOVE Dave Matthews but I dont think he quite falls into this faggy area.

Yea, I do enjoy some of this music and can totally appreciate it, but my problem with it is WHERE it comes from. Greg L totally hits the nail on the head becuz no matter how the Illuminat has shaped the male image into a waxed and gelled panty waist, man purse carrying hipster type thing, the fact remains that a man should be strong, resilient, determined, and long suffering. I had one of these panty waste types hipster folk kids over to see how we could collaborate and all he did was play this sad, mopey quarter note shit and whined about his girlfriend (this sounded like a dying yak, Im not making this up) that after an hour I was like, um, I gotta go to bed, I gotta work early tomorrow.

I enjoy some of this emo shit, but everyone takes this crap way too far!

Okay, read thru the whole thread, this has to be the greatest thread ever and the greatest forum ever! The debate between FP and PDP was amazing! I realize the thread has returned to its intended direction but I guess I'm commenting on the thread in it's entirety... here goes...

The most often talked about subject in this thread was GaGa. Yes, she is or was a girl, Stephanie something, a gorgeous brunette who seems to have been brainwashed by her Illuminati handlers. Anway, one thing I will assert is that YES, GaGa/Stephanie IS the best artist/musician/songwriter on the market today! Let me explain why.

I listen to EVERY and ANY genre of music. It simply needs substance, groove, energy, talent, any combination of these or all. GaGa is amazing. Her piano work is flawless. Her composition is stellar. Her timing and tempo changes are emotional and pull you through the tune, feeling the rush and heartbreak as she explains the sad state of things with her eerire, kind of faded starlet past her prime vocals that are pretty yet haunting at the same time.

And then there's the sad, sad fact that one of the most talented artists to come along in a LONG time gives all that up for fame and fortune, turns all her hard written, well thought out compositions into mindless MIDI auto tuned crap, becomes a drag queen he/she thing and goes for the cheap thrill. What a waste but its my opinion. As an artist, its got to be a crippling thing to realize that no one likes what I can do naturally, even though I know Im amazing for doing it, but I want everyone to like me more so Ill just let the computer play my melodies while I sing and run around in my bra and panties.

IMO, if she had just done her own thing, she would have developed a cult following, like Adelle, and, when her figure faded when she was older, her fan base may have still been there. Im sure 90% of her fan base doesnt even know what a talented pianist she is! Like the one poster stated, the general public are IDIOTS! He is right.

In the other corner, let's look at Vanessa Carlton: a fresh, young, budding pianist comeso ut of the woodwork with a hit song and a knockout body and look. The industry defenitely has plans to sex her up and sell her out as it did GaGa. This time, the artist refuses. Vanessa goes on to a diff label with then B-friend Stephan Jenkins, lead man from Third Eye Blind, to create one of my most favorite albums, Harmonium. The album is not for everyone but it is pure piano tunes written from a soul that has so many interesting influences from all different spectrums that blend together into an album with a total indie, hipster, folk vibe to it and, including her sexy as hell moaning vocals, creates just a wonderful listen from start to finish. She goes on to another record label, becuz, like last time, her current label wants more sex, less uniqueness, and releasees Heroes to Thieves, an album that seems to sort of pick up from where Harmonium left off, with Jenkins doing a bit more songwriting and way too much producing (IMO) but it sounds nice, if not a little ambiguous. After her and Jenkins break up and the label dumps her for the same reasons the others did, she finally has a breakdown, sells her house in NY, and pays for Rabbits on the Run to be recorded out of pocket. Rabbits on the Run is one of the most amzing albums you'll ever hear. Recorded in a tiny studio somewhere in England on nothing but analog, the album totally takes us back in time to when music was something special.

Moving on, I wanna touch on the pop dribble. And yes, a lot of it is dribble. But saying it all is is similar to saying that anyone who can play guitar but cant read sheet music is not a real musician. Bad analogy, I know. Just bare with me.

My case here is none other than Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus?! WTF?!! I know, right? But read on...
The song I'm thinking off is that annoying, catchy tune that says "She's just being Miley, the next time we hang out...something, something, etc., etc.," Anyways, if you ever heard the song, you probably hate it. But listen to it again and THIS time, imagine the same tempo and groove and key BUT Marilyn Manson and his band playing it. All the sudden, its awesome. My point here is that its simply good songwriting and a nice recording. IMO, this is not crap but well composed, catchy, straight to the point rock that would sound better with Manson screaming out than little slut Miley. It's all in the context, I suppose. She DOES have a nice butt. Except that's not where her voice comes out... or maybe it is? :laughings: okay, moving along...

Other points I have is that I listen to music objectively, fully open minded and simply for the reason that I enjoy music in general and I also enjoy critically listening to what the engineer did when he put the piece together. I listen to Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, Jay Z, Cannibal Corpse, Mastadon, Iced Earth, Metallica, Megadeth, Mandy Moore, Britney, GaGa, Elton John, the Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Kenney CHesney, Mozart, ANYTHING! And I enjoy them all. Why? They're all music. Now, I PREFER some over others. My main focus is rock and thrash metal. I have a Mustaine Dean VMNTX, the United Abominations V and I love the hell out of that fingerboard. But I also love my Ovation acoustic. Music is meant to be enjoyed. I agree that oyu need to find your niche and run with it.

The music I'm working on right now sounds like a mix between Third Eye Blind and the Who. Is Third Eye Blind a faggy pop band? To most who have never taken the time to investigate, that answer will probably be yes. But how many fagggy pop groups have lyrics such as, you f**king whore, I'll kill you? featured over a poppy, Who sounding rock anthem? I'll admit, Stephan has simply lost his mind and I think the band should just stop already, but that's another discussion.

My point is is that saying one form of music is crap SIMPLY becuz you don't enjoy it is not realistic. I'm not into death metal. My ONLY reason is becuz I HATE the way they sing. I don't enjoy listening to it and I can't stand not being able to understand what they say. BUT I love singing it myse3lf!! LOL how goof y is that? I love playing death metal music, cuz its fast. But right now my fav spped metal band is Dragonforce and even most folks dont consider them to metal.

Where you can really find a lot of quality music and musicianship is in the indie scene, be it pop rock, metal, black metal, underground, urban, whatever. I think music is too braod and vast to say any particular genre is crap as a whole.

There are many ways to market your music and it is all about leverage. I would pick a few marketing channels out and learn how to excel at each, one at a time. Probably the best tip I could give for marketing online would be to learn a little bit of SEO (search engine optimization). Especially for video. I've worked with plenty of bands that just have no idea that putting your Youtube video up with just a title like "your band - your song" is pointless. It's not their fault, they just don't know. All videos on the web should include about 500 words of transcript or description text that is relevant to keywords and phrases that you know are being searched. Not what you think is being searched. That part of SEO is called keyword research. Check out VersifanMusicMarketing. sorry can't post the link.
