Promoting music online?

Something I should of mentioned as well when I came back from HR.com vacation lol and started posting here again. I've had several "labels" contact me, for my Death Metal. Alot of them have been these so called labels that just want to get a lot of bands on their roster, but not release any real CDs etc. Currently I'm talking with a few real labels who are interested in working with me. One of them even went as far as to tell me they wanted to release what ever Brutal Death Metal I come up with. When you're giving your music away for free anyway, a record label can really help get your music out there, but it's not worth it if you're going to be giving your music away for free and be in debt to the record label at the same time. So, you have to be careful.

Can you do it with online promoting? YES you can. Try all the things I've been saying and give it a good 9 months of spending 10 to 30 minutes promoting anyway you can, every single day, but always reaching for that target audience. Always look for the fans of the type of music you play or else it's pointless. I've been #1 locally on reverberation for 9 months straight with little competition from any other band, even ones who are well known nationally. Again, yes you can promote online, just make sure you're not wasting your time on all the BS people come up with to sell their ebooks or services lol.

Lol. Those social networking charts mean jack shit. They're click counters. You can put a scratch track up there and if you can fool enough dummies into clicking it, it will go #1.

Yeah but a lot of people always try to get up there and constantly promote it lol.

Some tips:

  • Submit your music to stations that take solicited unsigned material - I know there are a couple on XM / Sirius as well as the Music Choice stations with your cable provider.
  • Make a video (doesn't have to be big budget) and get it on YouTube and Vimeo.
  • Record some YouTube videos of live performances and some behind-the-scenes of the band recording or just screwing around.
  • Get yourself on Last.fm and link up your tunes on Blip.fm
  • Consider joining Pump Audio
  • Get your music on iTunes, CDBaby, EMusic, Rhapsody, etc (go through CDBABY)
  • Do things that create a two-way relationship with your fans - meet ups, contests, etc.
  • Join Twitter and tweet about shows, band announcements, interact with others in the twitterverse... but don't over tweet.
  • Offer some free downloads of your music
  • Create banners / badges that fans can download and put on their site that link back to yours
  • Register a domain name for your band. Even if you don't have a proper website yet, forward your domain name to your FB page so people can easily find you online.
  • Get a proper website
  • Make a crazy video that goes viral and draws tons of attention to your band - in a good way... good luck with this one.
  • Make friends and link up with bigger bands / artists that will expose you to their larger fan bases.
  • There's more, but I'm tired of typing and you can figure out the rest.

Nice list...

I have the same problem, currently I only have some records on soundcloud and I'm not sure how to proceed. I don't have the means to make a youtube video. Unless I can use just a static image and sound but this seems kind of lame :/

Nice List. But don't forget music blogs. If your music is any good, many bloggers would probably post about it and introduce you to their many readers. The are no shortages of indie music bloggers looking for new artists and material.

One of the most popular ways to sell your music in a record deal these days is to use the power of the internet. A lot of budding artists, singers and musicians are promoting their music online just to get noticed, create a fan base and of course that is probably the ultimate goal of singers as well as the artists. If you want to promote your music online, then there are actually a lot of ways to do it. By using the websites such as YouTube, MySpace, Facebook you can easily promote your music because millions of the people are interacted with these websites.

Another one who took the blue pill.

I'm sure you'll be a mega-star in no time. ;)

I just want to put a vote in for videos on youtube.. but the video itself and youtube itself isn't enough.. it's gotta be such a clever video that people want to share it. I'm in the rut, unfortunately, because I'm not good at video, only music. Even if I had a decent camera, i wouldn't know what to put in the video :(

I don't really like OK GO, but I've seen every one of their videos.
