thats what I mean, without the mad glam and gaga image she would maybe not be as recognised/successful....she's no Alicia Keys so she needed an edge...her image is one she has built for years after burlesque shows in lower manhattan and her first lady starlight persona

like I said..clever girl

lol @ more indepth gagafacts

Oh for sure. She sure as hell wouldn't be known if she didn't have this image she has.

And I thought you were referring to, how to put this, her mental insanity? I guess that's just me, and maybe it's just for show, but she certainly has issues.

She is left handed :D

So it IS a she? :o

Oh don't get me wrong, I highly disagree with spamming people, I don't think it's good business practice and it can definitely be harmful to your image, but it certainly can work.

So can hijacking a radio station. Ever see "Airheads"? Good movie.

There's millions of amateur musician dorks hawking their wares all over the internet. About .0000000000001% of them go huge or get rich. The odds of just lucking out and getting noticed by Simon Cowell are probably better than rampaging youtube and facebook with most people's garbage.

some tips:

  • submit your music to stations that take solicited unsigned material - i know there are a couple on xm / sirius as well as the music choice stations with your cable provider.
  • make a video (doesn't have to be big budget) and get it on youtube and vimeo.
  • record some youtube videos of live performances and some behind-the-scenes of the band recording or just screwing around.
  • get yourself on last.fm and link up your tunes on blip.fm
  • consider joining pump audio
  • get your music on itunes, cdbaby, emusic, rhapsody, etc (go through cdbaby)
  • do things that create a two-way relationship with your fans - meet ups, contests, etc.
  • join twitter and tweet about shows, band announcements, interact with others in the twitterverse... But don't over tweet.
  • offer some free downloads of your music
  • create banners / badges that fans can download and put on their site that link back to yours
  • register a domain name for your band. Even if you don't have a proper website yet, forward your domain name to your fb page so people can easily find you online.
  • get a proper website
  • make a crazy video that goes viral and draws tons of attention to your band - in a good way... Good luck with this one.
  • make friends and link up with bigger bands / artists that will expose you to their larger fan bases.
  • there's more, but i'm tired of typing and you can figure out the rest.

very helpful stuff

Oh man! I wanna be those guys!

Rebecca Black's career may actually recover eventually. Hanson's last album got to 30 on the Billboard charts despite being an independent album by those "Mmm Bop" guys. (I feel bad that I looked that up.)

I agree with you guys some what, but I still stand by the fact that most non targeted fan mongering will do little if nothing. Not everyone writes songs to sell. There are musicians out there who aren't trying to get to the "big times" because obviously being pop and trendy is pretty gay. As much as lady Gaga tries to be a freak, she's still on a fad waggon, sold out made to sell and quite shitty pop much. Now the argument could be made that she sells millions of albums which means a lot of people like her music. And also that because more people like her that means her music is better, which is not the case because people are stupid. People want the latest most hot bull shit you can give them. If she were to sell her poop and it was popular to buy Lady Gaga Turds for decoration, everyone would be buying one. Because people love selling out and doing the trendy thing. That doesn't make buying poop GOOD. It's still a steaming pile of shit when the magic dies and it's all over for Lady Gaga.

Which brings me to my point. You have to target people who like your music and/or give them something to talk about. You have to be creative and think of things that will draw attention to you're music. I've actually devised a plan for my own endeavours. Unfortunately I can't share it with you guys because it's devious, sinister and very extreme. It'll be very time consuming and might not work out, but I should gain mass fans who like the kind of music I play :D

Check this video. This is the type of thing that makes people talk. It's not viral, but the people who like this kind of thing probably bought a copy. I want to buy one that's for sure :D

i started giving away our albums for free download in 2003, before it was trendy. we gained alot of fans through radio play, word of mouth and getting onto good shows with national acts... this was all due to the fact we gave away the music, and people got familiar with us... in todays market, you make money touring in support of your album and merch sales... the day of album sales is long over... touring is a key factor to achieving success. only a very select few are LUCKY enough to get a viral video or song and make it big... it takes alot of work and dedication. tour and people will find you.

I've never heard of you, so it's not working.

I sold 2 albums and 2 singles on iTunes (Europe) yesterday but I've no idea how I did it. Any ideas?

People like to make false claims. Especially people who are selling something. For $49.99 I'll sell you all 500 ebooks at this incredible low price. They are valued over 1 million dollars. So, you're getting the best deal in the world and you'll be a huge successes if you do all the things these few successful people did.

I need to write a good article for my ads by google and maybe I'll sucker in a few people to by my ebooks for the low price of $20 dollars :P

I think it's more logical and practical to, like I've said already, find your niche and just keep playing music. Promote to people who actually like the type of music you play. Send your music to be reviewed by people who like the kind of music you play. You'll get far less negative feed back from people who are into your music lol. Slowly over time you'll build up a small fan based and make as many new friends as you can who support what you do. If you're like me, with no band, and all you can do is keep making new music, take your time and just keep at it. Perfect your style and the fans you gain over the years of work will appreciate it and support you. Don't expect to get rich, just love what you do and if it pays off down the road when you're old it'll be well worth it.

People love cult classics and you can saturate your niche over the years and work your way to being a prominent figure of your genre.

If you're a cover band or sound like GNR, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Britney spears etc. etc. etc. Don't expect do be the slightest bit successful. You have to try to be original, similarities are fine, but no one wants to hear a knock off band. They can just listen to the original and hear much better music in most cases.

I disagree. If you're a cover band, expect to be exactly the slightest bit successful. Where I live, all the cover bands have a show every week. They play consistently and are getting paid. They're never going to get any bigger, and no one's going to buy CDs of their covers, but they are marginally successful.

Cover/tribute bands are the only sector of live music where people actually make any money.

If you're playing originals, you aint making shit.

Cover/tribute bands are fucking lame as fuck and kill opportunities for original material bands, but at least they generally get paid.
