Programming?

I've seen the word "programming" used in these forums. What does this mean in relation to recording and/or MIDI and/or synthesis?

In these forums, it's probably referring to creating sounds on synthesizers. Could also be constructing effects patches on digital effects or creating a drum part on a drum machine.
