How's everyone doing? It's been awhile since I've posted. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about independent production companies. I've been advised by others, and have been thinking myself, that this might be something to pursue--starting a production company, that is. I write good songs in a variety of genres, and I'm confident, that if working with professional engineers I can "produce" a good product. I don't have an engineering background, but I'm an "idea" guy. I generally co-produce my demos with a professional producer and we're usually in sync with each other and I've found that we notice the same problems in a song or performance, etc. Although I don't touch the board I'll be in on the mix, etc. But what I can do-it's kind of an audacious thing to say, but let's just say for the sake of argument I'm correct-is take anyone who can sing or play their instrument and make hit songs.
I've got material for a female country artist, male country, straight ahead female rock-a la Melissa Etheridge/amanda Marshall, female R and B -guitar pop-alternative-basically anything you would hear on the radio.
One thing I'm confident in is that the songwriting is there. I'm at the point where I'm about to shop a number of demos(of myself singing and playing) so as of yet I don't have any professional credits, but I've been working with pro engineers and producers who have been partially specing their services. They've been around the business longer than me and seem to think I'll be getting my money back at the very least.
Now to my point! Does anyone have any knowledge about how production companies work? I've read every music book I can get my hands on and I have a feel for the basic principles of what a production company does, and I plan on taking this up with my entertainment lawyer, but I thought I'd start here. I should say that the type of thing I'd be doing is not a full length album for each artist-I don't have the capital for that. It would be a 3-4 song demo per artist. I've read that if a major record company signs an artist based on this length demo, the production company nets in the 30-40 thousand dollar range. A full album would obviously be 100 k or more but as I said I don't have this kind of capital. I don't have a studio so I'd be paying for studio time-so it's just 3-4 songs per artist.
I'd love to hear thoughts and opinions from anyone in the know. Thanks in advance!
