Ok, my band.. started recording a song of ours today. It was me(guitar/vocals) and our bassist and drummer. Recording was going fine, until on like the second track the track lights went off.. and low and hehold it says my card was full. I thought you got back time everytime u recorded over a track.. but yet it took away time from my card every time we did another take. Can anyone tell me whats wrong.

The next problem is, I read the manual.. but still can't figure out on tracks 5/6 and 7/8 to use just 5 or just 6, and not both, and how to use both tracks when u need to. This confuses me.

the last question, really partains to n-track but anyway...

I was wondering what are some things i can do to make my guitars and drums sound better? I will try to post a rough mp3 of what we are working on a lil later.. but mainly I've been messing around with the compressors and EQ's and thats helped alot, but I think it could get alot better.

please help!! Thanks

There is one thing I can definitely help you with and the others I will just give you some things that I've done that may not be in the "Basic Recording Book", but they work for me.
First of all, when you mess up a take and you want to do the whole thing over do the following: Erase the tracks by pushing menu, track, then erase track, then enter. Then go to song, delete unused. After you do delete unused you will have your time back and be ready for another take. Remember DELETE UNUSED. Unless you do it you will not have your time back.

In n-track on eq and compression, I don't use the fasoft compressor, but with the eq just remember this little rule less is always better.
For compression I use endorphin, but I don't use it until I've done a mixdown. If you use just a little endorphin on a vocal track it seems to help the vocal "sit" a little better.

Remember DELETE UNUSED

Wow, that sounds like a real PAIN! 5 steps just to re-record another take? Even with analog, it's just three: Stop, Rewind, Play/Rec.

The process I explained in the digital realm probably takes 10 seconds at the most and you don't really have to even do that to do a re-take. Actually the process I explained takes about as long as it would take you to push 'stop' and 'rewind', but you don't have to wait for the thing to actually rewind.

erasing tracks

i dont bother to erase the tracks, i do a couple of takes them go to delete unused and get the same results with one less step, granted it is a very easy and fast step. I only erase the tracks after a mixdown to channel 5 and 6, to free up more available tracks for recording.

have fun

Yes, but it also gives you the option of not performing those steps and having all previous takes saved for later use on a PC...

So I either push a bunch of buttons for every completed take I want to redo, or I fill my card instently with takes I don't need. Not exactly th' ringing endorsement for this macine I expected to see.

maybe the next generation machine will fix these problems. .. .

card

its really not all that bad, you can get a bigger card but it works great for me. I do one song at a time and then download to pc, on a 3 min song after bouncing i easily finish with 8 tracks on a song.

Here we go again! You have the options....pushing a "bunch" of buttons, or sittin there watchin you analog machine rewind. Then, either having digital quality, or......well, analog.

Too bad I don't have the option of just recording over the previous take without all this bother or waste. sounds liek another design problem from fostex with this almost-8 track. Probalby sounded great on paper. Like I said, maybe next time they'll figure it out.

Your right bd, here we go again.

creosote, it sounds as if your opinion is already formed about the MR-8 and no matter what some of us say about it your mind will not be changed. But, have you listened to some of the songs that have been recorded with it? Check them out and you might be surprised what folks can do with a $300 recorder.

Don't bother arguing with this putz - he was acting like a jerk in the Guitar forum, also. Almost sounds like he's a refugee from the Tascam board.

I figure this guy is a real pro........what with havin 9 whole posts on the board. Don't get me wrong, I have a LONG way to go before I get to the quality of some of these guys. Maybe then I'll be able to step up to a really good ANALOG machine!

Will that make me play better?

ps...got nothin against Analog.....some of my best work was done on r2r. I hope to get back to that level again someday.

Troll points: 2.5/10

bizzwriter,
Good post.
Maybe by the time fostex figures it out, the troll will learn to spell too.
