problem with soundcard

I'm running an iMac with Logic and a Motu 828 soundcard.

It was all working fine until yesterday when it started to pop and crackle, and occasionally fizzle out. Today is much worse. The audio stops completely for 10 or 15 seconds at a time, and I can't even hear what I'm monitoring through the soundcar (micrrophone).

I just got a new cable to see if it's that, but it's not. I've tried the firewire input on the mac to see if that's OK, and it's fine. I also reinstalled the latest drivers from the MOTU site. I can't work out what the problem is. It's kind of a last resort, but I'm thinking maybe I have to buy a new soundcard?

Audio runs absolutely fine with the mac's internal soundcard, so I know that it's not that.

So what is it?! Any ideas?

If the hardware isn't going bad, could it be you loaded up something new on your computer and it's a resource hog?? Virus?? Anti-Virus?? If nothing like that, then it sounds like a hardware problem. Can you run the Motu on another Mac?? Maybe borrow a friend's or something. Motu's don't run on pc's , do they??
