Problem for micing a Ovation Acoustic Guitar

hi....i have a pair of AKG C1000 ,and a ovation acoustic guitar.
there is a terrible....the soundhole of the guitar is not right in the middle
i tried to do spaces pair......one mic point to around the 12th-16th fret, and i don't know where i should place the second mic. i tried move around.....but i can't get a natural acoustic tone..
also, i don't know how far i should put the microphones away to my guitar

second question. i have a nylons guitar......how can i adjust the boomy sound without moving the mic away from the soundhole? can i put something to cover the sound whole , what thing?

please help!!!
 
Very tough to get a "natural" sound out of such an unnatural guitar. Line out balanced with a mic about 6" away from the sound holes, pointing at the twelfth will probably get you a decent starting point
 
Kenny's right. Ovations aren't the best for getting natural acoustic sounds. I would take Kenny's advice, but I also have something to add. If it sounds good to you where ever you are playing it, stick a mic right by your ear. I know it sounds strange, but this is always my last refuge. Usually works out..........usually ;)
 
You'd be better off micing an acoustic guitar that you found in the trash over an Ovation.

My buddy came to my studio to record with an Ovation and we just couldn't get anything to sound right. On one of the songs we did the thin sound was pretty good, but everything else it was just crap, not nearly a big enough sound to stand alone.

I have an acoustic I found in the trash once, can't even be played past the 10th fret. We tried micing that and it sounded a helluva lot better.

our other guitarist has an ovation as well as my uncle. They are terrible studio guitars...and I'm not much of a fan of them for performance either, though they work well with a band. Try the over the should placement like he said. I think your best bet will be to forget getting a tight arrangement and try to let the room do the work. Place your akgs several feet away towards the instrument. Let the room work its magic.
 
so a guy waks into a studio with an ovation and a C1000 and says........

Ovations are good for lead work----ala Al Dimeola-----But if you want a "natural" sound it'll be a real chore.
 
aaah... the Ovation bashing thread.

You guys must be upset that Melissa Ethridge is gay and Glen Campbell just looks awful now. :D

I just wanted to say I think Ovations suck ass too.
 
I've had some great results with an SP B1 pointed at the 12th about 8 inches back on an ovation. No they're not great, I made the player put a set of elixir's on it before the session.

Listen to any of the Allan Marshal stuff in my signature

C1000's would be my last choice of mic for acoustic guitar
 
I think recordings of an Ovation miced with a c1000 would be a good torture tool for out troops when interrogating war prisoners.

...but wait...that would be cruel...and very un-Geneva Convention.

It must be clear that an Ovation is not the best sounding acoustic guitar, it's clear as well that a C1000 is not the best sounding microphone. The sound isn't that bad, but I don't like it's off axis response and it's pattern.

So it must be clear that you wont get a killer sound with an Ovation and a pair of C1000's, but at least you'll get a decent sound.

Try an ORTF pair of the C1000's close to the guitar or a DIN pair, don't use the C1000's as an XY pair that won't work good unless you use the extra caps over the capsules that'll make them hyper cardioid.

ORTF is 17cm apart and a 110 deg angle, DIN is 20cm apart and a 90 deg angle.
