Pro Tools Torubles

I'm trying to learn Pro Tools, but currently only using the M-Powered Demo download.


The issue I am having, is I cannot figure out how to record a virtual instrument (Softsynths, BFD, etc) as audio.

I can get my midi to play the Virtual Instrument.

I can get an Audio Track to play the resulting sounds back to me.

But I CANNOT get it recorded.

Anytime I try to BUS it out.... my ARM RECORDING button dissappears.


I've checked the downloaded manual, and the "Pro Tools Complete Guide". I've even looked over all the Pro Tools VTC Videos.

I have to be overlooking something simple here...

Anybody know how to record a virtual instrument as audio ?
 
well, if you are getting an audio track to play the audio....then just record the audio track. In other words...press record!!!! Whatever is playing on the audio track will be recorded.

And somehow I spelled TROUBLES wrong when I created this thread.

I went back through this in detail again, and I still cannot get it.

There must be SOME way to record the resulting audio, from a Synth Plug-In.

If I simply hit record on the audio track that has the plugin, it does record anything.
 
Which version are you using? Actually I don't think it matters. There is no way to route it directly. I think if you route the audio track (that's playing your midi) into a bus and then create another audio track and choose your bus as the source, you should then be able to record it that way.

Even if that works, it is awkward. You should just record your part as midi and then select your audio track and render it as a wav file. That is what I do to save CPU power with plug-ins that suck power.

I am using M-Powered DEMO.


Sorry to be a NEWBIE.... but how do I "select your audio track and render it as a wav file" ??

again, have you read the tutorials I linked to?
you basically just need to record arm the track and press record. I assume you know how to do that?
 
On the demo you cannot set the input to an aux bus without it unarming (and greying out) the rec button. I assume that is to keep folks from using the demo to do full mixes ( as in recording the full song down to stereo instead of bouncing)

it works as you think it should on a nondemo version.

Wow, thank you so much Randy.

I was pulling my hair out on this.

It was the DEMO version causing me grief all along. You are right, I cannot record off a bus, because the demo prevents me.

The good news is, I was doing it right.

Never heard of reaper, but I am willing to check it out.

Is it missing anything that Pro Tools has ?

Reaper is great. It has pretty much everything that PT has. But the best thing is that you can explore it totally for free.

As far as PT goes, you will not be able to do any rendering with the demo. I can tell you that what you want to do is fairly easy with the full version. It is more expensive than Reaper, but it's all about what you prefer. I think Reaper is much easier to learn than PT. Check it out.

A friend was playing with the demo. I was showing him how to use it. Came across the same issue. I assumed that it was for the mentioned reasons. To test it you can set the input to a physical I/O and enable the record button , as soon as you change it to a bus the record arm button goes gray..


I tried reaper ( admittedly for a short time ) and didn'y like the editing features, however it seemed like a great program for just about any other purpose.

Not trying to start a my DAW is better than your DAW war here, I think they all are about the same in quality these days , just a preferred work flow. I have got used to PT's inplace editing ( used to use Cubase and the separate "wave editor" drove me nuts). Use what you are comfortable with. Simply put there are going to be programs out there that can do more than M-powered. I use PTHD at the studio so its very nice to have an M-powered rig at the how for working on projects. I am much more efficient in M-powered. Use what you are comfortable using ,get work done.
