I can't seem to get Pro Tools Free to work at all. I can't seem to get any signal and it says there is not enough space allocated for recording...

I am running osX.2 and 512ram 1g proc. speed.

It says that I don't need any additional hardware, and I record successfully into SoundEdit.

Am I wasting my time with the free program? Can anyone suggest another program I can multitrack with without additional hardware?

PTF doesn't work in OSX, or in "Classic" mode under OSX. You have to actually boot from an OS 9 system so if your Mac can't boot from 9 you're SOL.

I haven't made the jump to X yet so I'm not very up-to-speed on what's available.

PTF works good on my hot-rodded 8600.:cool:
 
I can boot from 9. I am new to mac, so what I want to know is if I boot from 9, will that be permanent, or will it start from 10 the next time I reboot?

Which Mac do you have? Are you sure it can actually boot from 9 and not just run in "Classic"?

If it can boot from 9 you'll want to put X & 9 on separate partitions or drives. That way the two systems won't screw each other up, and it's a lot easier to keep things organized that way.

BTW here's a great site for general Mac questions.
 
I am using a new Powerbook G4.

When I start ProTools free, it jumps into os9 classic, but hadn't you mentioned it wouldn't work in classic mode? My buddy will help me partition the drives. Thanks for that info.

But there has to be a way to get this joint to work...
 
It won't work on the new non-OS9 Macs. PT needs to have direct access to the sound harware which it can't when running in "Classic" under X.

There have been some rumors of an X version floating around the DUC but nothing announced from Digi yet. I wouldn't count on it anytime soon.

The only way to use PTF is on a Mac that can run 9. Lots of people using it on older Power/iBooks to do editing on the go. You could run it on an upgraded beige Mac like my 8600 with some upgrades (G3, video,RAM, drives, etc), but by the time you get something setup to run well you'll be real close to the cost of a Mbox. That comes with PTLE 6 (OSX), a lot more tracks, and better in/out hardware than a stock Mac.
