Hey All!

Feeling kinda stupid right now, Iv'e never tried comp recording (only studio stuff with an engineer) so here goes...

Borrowed a Mackie 1202VLZ pro for the weekend so I could record some f'ed up drum loops . Then I thought , hey I'll download PT Free and record the tracks into the computer so I can have longer performances to choose from.
So I got my 2 ECM8000 set up as roomies and an ambient room mic and they sound great in the headphones.

But I can't get the signal into PT Free! Computer is an IMAC DV, with the 1/8 input for audio. I've got trs 1/4 (L and R) into a single 1/4 which then has a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter.

I've tried to get signal out of every possible place on the Mackie from main out to aux send to channel 1 & 2 inserts and no dice.

Anyone use this devilish Pro Tools Free demon out there that can help? I am 5 seconds away from pulling out an old tape deck and recording it to that hiss and all....

thanks!

PTFree IMO is bad for Digidesign PR. It makes me want to pull out my hair! I gave it up about a half an hour after I installed it. So I cannot help you. All I can do is tell you that your not the only one who *loathes* it...

The real suckers are the ones who paid the $9.50 for shipping for copy of the program on disk...what a joke! I've used ProTools long enough to know that it will be thought of the same way as CMX video editing...made sense then, but things are different now!

hey,

go to your control panel and choose sound and multimedia(assuming that you are using a windows PC) ALso turn off the hard disk memory(I forget the exact term right now)

Now for sound recording, select the input that you want to use. I.e the input that the mixer is going into. This will be the only input available to pt.

now load ptfree
Start a new session
create a track. make it a stereo audio track.

hit record arm on the track. Hit record in the transport and then hit play. Voila

Read again mon ami, I stated that it was an Imac DV. The directions were similar though, and were not successful.

Thanks for trying though, I do appreciate.

Here's a ray of hope though, I have it on pretty good authority that Digidesign is going to debut an MOTU 828 style, firewire interface so you can bypass the soundcard and still record into a PC/MAC. Let's hope its under a $1000 .......

Do the two 1/4" plugs go into a single STEREO 1/4" adapter? Then into an 1/8" adapter that is also STEREO? I'm sorry, but I have hard time believing that it's Pro Tools Free's fault, it was tested extensively with the entire iMac line. Is there a way you can make sure that your system of adapters is working, perhaps a tape deck or something that you can plug it into? That would be the area I would think was a problem.

I have no probs with PT free

I run PT free on my Indigo 350mhz imac and it records like a bitch. Are you using the internal sound card? if so go to control panel, sound and set the audio input as audio in. If that doesn't work and its not your adaptors, the audio input maybe f*%ked.

Good luck

I heard PT is going to call it the Digi 002. You are not really bypassing the soundcard...it's in the interface.

I love my Motu 828 for that reason...buy a laptop and...mobile recording!

I hear Motu has a new firewire unit...(896??)...but it's a little more pricy.
