I'd stick with the 002, it's a great control surface.

If you really wanna jazz it up then add some external converters like an Octopre or something.

I want to eventually move toward external pres, converters, etc.
AKA higher-end stuff.

But for now I'll just have to stick with the 002 and Presonus Digimax LT.
I do have a couple channel strips coming in that I'll convert to rackmount pres to insert into the extra unused ins of my 002. Totally stoked about that. Just not stoked about using the crappy clock in the 002.

I hear that having a nice clock can really make a difference in your sound.

Whilst the clock in the 002 may not be the best on the market, it's not going to be the limiting factor in your setup.

Try to look at the bigger picture here!

Like I said, get some good converters (clock to them too) and you're laughing. Even then the converters in the 002 are not dreadful and again are not going to be the limiting factors in your recordings ;)

Yep, got that. What I heard is that you could use it with any such interface, but you still had to *purchase* the software with an Avid interface.

I can replace my 002 now, but I just don't know what's good. I'd like to still have a control surface and lightpipe in, and I'd need a converter, obviously.

Just to clarify the "I heard ..." (those things tend to go viral rather quickly)...

Pro Tools 9.0 HD can only be purchased with an Avid Core or HD Native card.

The Pro Tools 9.0 that is replacing LE and M-Powered can be purchased just as software, without purchasing Avid hardware.

The big picture is that everything is a limiting factor... lol.

Pres, mics, converter, clock, monitors, room....

man i hope protools 9 plays nice with my Steinberg MR816 cuz that would be awesome... digidesign hardware < dog poop ;)

While this is true, adding the new toolkit to pro tools 9 gets you all the functionality of HD minus the ability to use the dsp stuff in HD.

But the new toolkit if $2k, so your looking at $2600 for HD software minus the HD hardware.

And you may want to keep this in mind.

I could be wrong, but I think there is one version of the software now.

It's "Pro Tools 9". There are not separate versions of it like "PT9 LE" and then "PT9 HD".
The hardware you have dictates the level of features allowed to you by the software.

So if you have PT9 and an Mbox, you're going to just have the "LE" features "unlocked" to you. If you have HD hardware, it's fully unlocked.

If you have LE hardware, you have the option of paying for the the rest of the features to be "unlocked" basically, via the CPToolkit 2.

Actually, if you have a Pro Tools 9 HD auth on your iLok, then you can run the software with any ASIO or Core Audio interface, with the features of Complete Production Toolkit 2 added.

If only I could afford a Mac Pro...

I watched the keynote the day it came out. There is still a PT9HD and a regular PT9.

Pro Tools 9HD now has features like 7.1 surround (pro tools 9 does not). But throw on another $2k for the toolkit and you can add this (and other) feature to pro tools 9.

PTHD8 users get the upgrade for $350.

Also, your assumption about what features you get is incorrect. Things like multi track beat detective and the new 96 audio track count are usable no matter what interface you have (talking pro tools 9). This also includes the increased aux and instrument tracks as well as ADC.

Yes there is one universal PT9 but the improved feature set that you can use with any interface applies to the MBoxes, too. That's how I understood the website. To get more features you can buy the toolkit on top of it. So there is no version like LE or M-Powered anymore and the interfaces you purchased don't cripple your PT9. That wouldn't make any sense if you could use _any_ interface with the basic PT9 features and the MBox or an M-Audio card would cause PT9 to further disable features. Not sure about HD interfaces, if they unlock more features or something. I didn't pay attention because I don't own any and don't plan to.

Cheers

does anyone know anything about avid student discount in the UK?

I see protools 9 crossgrade student version in studica US online for 124.95, but they don't have any PT9 products in the UK store yet.
I'm tempted to just buy it from the US store online, but i'm not sure if you can do that or not.

I contacted Avid to ask about student discount, and they basically said they don't do it, but some authorised resellers might...and that i should just phone them all!

Having phoned a load of resellers, the best i can get is £165 down from £175!!!

makes you wana use logic right?

Its a huge announcement from the avid camp the Pro Tools 9 doesn't require any Interface and can work with any recording interface.

Does that mean that qestion numero uno of the faq needs to be updated?

nah, i'm just talking about any mbox.

let's face it, mboxes were always over priced compared to similar products from other companies, purely because they give you access to protools.

now that PT9 is out, no one's gona pay the same money for an mbox 2 as they would have a few months ago..

Yeah that's true now no one have to rely on over priced products because PT9 which is the latest version of pro tools works with or without an interface and create bigger, better-sounding mixes with more tracks, Automatic Delay Compensation, and other pro features. If anyone crossgrade to PT9 then it costs $249 USD and if for buying new pro tools it costs $599.

Lol.. I'm a PT user, but you sound like you work for Avid. "Bigger, better-sounding mixes" I would say is blasphemy. PT does not have a leg up on giving the user the ability to make "bigger, better-sounding mixes", nor is that a "pro feature".
