We are in the early stages of studio design and equipment acquisition, basing the studio around a Mackie analogue 8 bus and a Fostex 16 track H/disc recorder.

What should be our priorities from here on re essential equipment purchases to get this up and running at DEMO level. In other words what DO we NEED and what can we put on the "Not Really Necessary" list.

Thanx in anticipation.

Microphones at this point. Something like 6 Shure SM-57s to get around a drum kit and guitar cabs, an AKG D-112 or AT-25 for a kick drum or bass cabs and a couple of condensers such as (but certainly not limited to)AT-4033s for drum overheads, acoustic instruments and vocals would be a very good start. A good compressor or two wouldn't hurt either.

A decent monitor system - either active (self-powered) or passive with a good amp. You'll also need some sort of outboard effects (reverb/delay)....

Really Necessary:

Mikes (see above)
Mic cables
Mic channel input boxes (if you have a studio)
Mic stands
Thread adaptors
Headphones
Headphone lead extensions
Headphone distribution boxes
Headphone amps
Pop filters
Phase reversal plugs if it's a Mackie
DI boxes active or passive
music stands (for lyrics)
TUNER

Not quite so really necessary

2 or 3 outboard effects units
at least 2 compressors and gates
good monitors.

But you really really must have lots and lots of passion

Cheers
John

Having at least one quality reverb would be a high priority. I would consider some of the better Yamaha and Lexicon 'verbs.
