i currently own a presonus firestudio project and was looking to buy a new microphone preamp (goldenage 73) to improve my vocal recordings.

I have only read good things about both of the preamps mentioned. will the goldenage pre 73 make an improvement to my sound or are the Xmax preamps ample enough already?

i am looking thicker, fuller sounding vocals and at the moment recording with the xmax pres sound a little on the thin side. I am close miking and have a fairly sound proof room.

The GAPs great, can be driven to have a very coloured sound if need be...i have a presonus digimax d8 which has the xmax preamps. They arent really comparable imo, the xmax are pretty clean, i run an elektron machinedrum and roland r8m through them and they give me transparecy and some nice clean gain...theyre slightly noisier than my focusrite scarlett pre amps but for a drum machine than desnt really matter

The presonus and focusrite are very similar and more workhorse like, the GAPs not suited for everything, but i love it on my guitar or bass...i use a joe meek preamp and an m audio omni to, but theyre nowhere near its class

This is a handy chart for colour comparision...the GAP is a neve clone so you have an idea of how coloured it can be

thanks this really helped, in what way does the gap colour the sound? would you say its suitable for vocals? if not could you recommend something that is in that price range

thanks again :)

Im an amateur compared to the guys in here, try starting a thread in the mic forum...but for vocals, unless your looking for a particular effect, or sound, id guess something cleaner might get more use

You can almost overdrive the GAP, it does have some pretty clean gain if you want, but I think the beauty of it is pushing it..im thinking a pre like a Grace 101 might be better for vox??
