New interface

Looking to purchase a new audio interface.

My current one is a presonus firestudio project. After something that will sound as good if not better. I don't necessarily need 8 inputs, at least two though. I don't have thunderbolt connection.

I've had the firestudio project interface now for about fourteen years, and it has served me well. Looking to upgrade and was wondering if the sound quality has improved on the newer models...? I can see they still use xmax preamps (which the project has)

The only benefits I can see is reduced latency, sleeker designs..

Note: are the usb 3 interfaces backwards compatible to usb 2.0

My budget is around £400 tops

Thoughts?

I don't know anything about a "presonus firestudio" however I recently upgraded to a Behringer UMC 1820 (8 inputs/up to 18 & 10 outputs/up to 20) which is itself a USB 2.0 interface and I love it. Using it in conjunction with my patchbay is great as I don't have to re-route any plugs/inputs/outputs just use a patch cable if I want to change something. $299, but was recently as low as $240 during recent sales (though I missed those sales as well, but it just before the drop... but still worth every penny to me).
