Preamp thread... heads up.

Good post DJL! As much as we've been butting heads lately, I'll be first to highlight your contributions. Good job. I've only read about a third of it so far. Looks like a lot of great info from some of the biggest players in the business. The makers of Daking, Grace, FMR RNP's/RNC, etc... Wow!

I know that we've butted heads some... but, I don't take it personal and I hope you don't either. Anyway thanks.

It looks like it could become a really great thread... I hope they post the Great River schematics and etc. :)

I wouldn't know what to do with that schematic, if they pasted it in my head, but I suppose it could be useful somehow to do that.

You can find the basic opamp schematic of the MP-2 original series preamps at Fred Forssell's site:

http://www.forsselltech.com/

The rest of it is not dramatically different than the stuff that you can find at Jensen Transformers site.

The starting point of an NV type can be found by looking around for a 1073.

What I do different in my unit, and why, will probably come up in conversation over at Harvey's site, so stay tuned.

Am I gonna publish the whole thing? Probably not, but why would you need it?

The meter circuits are based on a PIC
16F876 microprocessor and a couple of absolute value circuits, all powered by a "gasp" switching power supply.

If you're looking for a good beginning "Neve" style circuit that you can build that is not horribly expensive, gives good results and you can probably learn a lot from, check out 7th Circle's kit.

If you really want to go into competition with me, well keep digging :-)

Be sure to check out recording.org's tech talk for lots of good DIY stuff too.

Way cool... thanks guys... I was just looking at the preamps at the Jensen site the other day and was wondering about them. I got real excited when I read you could build a GR pre for about $250 or so if I shop right. Thanks for the links... I headed there now. Oh and Fletcher posted something about the 7th Circle's kit a while back too... they were sold out last time I checked, I'll have to check it out again... thanks for the tips.

Those guys are already over my head. Thanks DJL for the link.

I was hoping they would step through the various stages of a preamp and talk about what makes each stage unique. I am curious as to how the transformer affects the signal and why that "iron" sound can't be duplicated at a lower cost.

That comment about getting the parts of a Great River preamp for $250 would be nice if it were true.

I seem to have lost the 7th Circle's kit page... anyone have a quick link? Thanks.

Stay tuned to the preamp link... I bet they'll cover a lot of that... and I think Dan said he was going to cover more on building the GR pre too... man, this GREAT stuff.

You've got to be kidding... I just want a good DIY preamp project that sounds great and that I can be proud of building. :)

Dan, you're a cool guy, just like everyone has said. Glad to see you posting here and I'm sure others are as well. I'll see you at the Prosound web thread too.

Yeah, it's turning into an amazing thread, with people on board like: John LaGrou (Millenia Media), Dan Kennedy (Great River Electronics), Mark McQuilken (FMR Audio), Tim Farrant (Buzz Audio), and Geoff Tanner (Neve)contributing already. And more to come.

What's really amazing to me is not only are they sharing WHAT they did freely, but more important, WHY they made certain choices.

DJL, this is like receiving the Christmas gift you always wanted.....in August!

With the numerous discussions,arguments, questions,inquiries
on all things "PRE", this thread rite here should be converted to a "STICKY" affixed at the top of this forum so that Newbies, Middies and Oldies can use as a reference point/link-up for present and future discussions on preamps!
