Hi Im planning on buying either a really good 1 channel preamp to get a warmer vocal tone, an RNC, or a mutichannel preamp for drums. My drums go through my Mackie 1402 VLZ mixer with XDR preamps, and into a yamaha 2816. I was wondering, with this setup, what will i get the most benefit out of buying? Any input woul be appreciated. also, how much better would the compression out of an RNC sound than the compression out of my aw2816, if at all?

What vocal mics do you have? I would look there first to improve my vocal sound.

I'm certainly no expert, but a KSM 27 combined with the XDRs probably gives you a fairly bright sound. You might try cutting a few dBs between 8-12 kHz to remove some of the brightness. Getting closer to the mic will also boost the bass response (proximity effect). Maybe the KSM 27 just doesn't suit your voice.

I've never used the RNC, but I doubt it will warm up your vocal tracks. It's known for clean, uncolored compression, which is a good thing but not a warm thing. For voice SP VTB-1 is ($179) a very versatile pre (with tube colorization) that many people like. The Meek MQ3 (or whatever the current version is) is about the same price and also has optical compression and musical eq.

For micing drums, your XDRs are going to be hard to beat for the money. You are not going to find four channels of mic pre under $1,000 (except maybe two RNPs for $475 each) that will be a significant step up from the XDRs.

Not knowing a poster's skill level always makes this risky....
Have you already learned and gotten what you can from the comps in the Yamaha? If not, the RNC is something that could be defered for a while.

ya i guess i could get a little more use out of the compression in the workstation. I also have another question reguarding mics and placement. It seems that I am getting a clearer hi hat tone out of my sm58 iming at my snare than I am out of my Octava 012 aimed directly on the hi hat. Unless the 58 is just a better hi hat mic, I cnnot fgure out why this is hpp0enin. Can anybody help with this? Thanks
