looking for active pa speakers, any body have any thoughts on electro voice elvx215 versus jbl 115 eons. looking for something that project live music in smaller venues??

They are a bit different as the EV's have 2 x 15's and the EONs only 1. So the EV's would be much punchier. However the EON's are powered and the EV's are not.
I actually like the sound of EV speaker, I have EV's in my bass rig and my PA runs EV subs. I would have bought EV top/mid boxes but I got a good deal on some Quest (Australian brand) speakers that are also very good.
In have in the past used JBL speakers in a large touring PA and was always happy with them and I have used EON's at a gig and they were also fine. It depends on budget, if you need powered speakers or already have an amp, and remember the EV's are larger to move around.

Quick question, I have been looking at the Yamaha Power Mixer, pretty light weight and it seems easier to control. Why would power speakers be better that an integrated mixer? The EMX212S Powered Mixer is not that expensive. Just a curiosity question.

Some people prefer powered mixers with unpowered speakers, some people prefer mixers with separate power amps and unpowered speakers, some people prefer mixers with powered speakers.
With a separate mixer (from amps/speakers) you can always expand. If you have a powered mixer, you are stuck with whatever features it has (# of inputs, output power).
Choose your system based on requirements and any future expansion needed. Those Sennheisers John linked to are neat, but I would never recommend wireless PA speakers except for those situations where running a cable from mixer to speaker is difficult.
What's your budget? What is the size of the venues? Go listen to some speakers at a music store. Can't go wrong with MOST JBLs. If you've got the budget, look at QSC as well. Less money, look at Mackie and Peavey.

Those are two entirely different categories of speaker. For your application probably the JBL Eon 515 or one of the many similar speakers is the better choice.

The amps and processing in powered speakers are always properly matched to the speakers whereas the amp in a powered mixer could end up being connected to just about anything whether it matches properly or not. The mixer is not the ideal place for the amplifiers.

I think this may be a bit over the top, price wise, for what he is asking, great product but. All he needs is some powered speakers, or speakers with a power amp.
On the subject of powered mixers, I don't like them for the reason that if you want to mix from out front with an engineer, you have to run the speaker leads back to the stage, the leads will be way too long and a pain in the butt. Powered mixers are OK if you have a small act that you mix from the stage but you then lack flexibility of doing bigger gigs, if you are only ever going to mix from the stage then they work fine.
By the way, I don't care personally if the speakers are powered or not, but I do like the flexibility of Mixer > amps > speakers, so that I can mix and match gear to suit the type and size of gig.
