Posting tape gear permitted here?

Daddy-O Daddy-O Baby
I have some tape gear that I'm trying to sell. I posted it on the Free Ads section, but one post is just tape recorders and tape. Is it considered bad form to post those FS ads here in the Analog Only section, too?

Thanks,

Otto

P.S. Boy did those 388 pictures bring back memories! I bought one new in the mid-80s and only sold it around 2000 when I went to wide-track analog machines. Except for the occasional dropouts and being no fun to align, they are great sounding machines.

I'm not sure if others would agree but personally I would not have any probs with posting tape decks here or strictly analog stuff. Yeah, posting on the "for sale" forum is cool but I never go there or good stuff (analog) gets burried under other stuff. I say post here but lets wait for others to chime in first.

Guys, do you think it's a good idea for people to sell their *strictly* tape / analog gear here ?

One rule I'd like to see followed is being totally honest and upfront, like you're selling to a good friend ... so this basically means no "Don Lapre" type adverts! :D Picts would also be helpful. ;)

Seems to me like an open post in the "Ads" section will get the most traffic- just post a mention of it here with a link?

That said, I don't really care if its posted directly here. Its not like there's going to be a flood of analog sales spam....

:D

I'd rather buy from someone here that I had a dialougue with, than from someone on ebay on the other side of the world. :)

I saw your big sale ad in the other forum,...

and it's quite impressive!

Unfortunately, you caught me in a NO-GEAR-BUYING phase of life,... just recently so, but otherwise I'd have been glad to snatch up a couple 3M 1/2" 4-tracks from'ya.

You'll get plenty of viable offers from other heads, but for me the goal is to put to use all my existing gear that I've already acquired, and to not "upgrade" until I've gotten e'thing I can from what I have,... which should be,... like,... never!! I've barely even scratched the surface of the full capabilities of the gear I already own.

But enough about me. This is not a thread about me. It's about you and your sale-gear. Post-away & good luck!

Under different circumstances, or maybe on a different day, I'd be glad to snatch up about a quarter of your stuff!! I'd still consider it, but I have to be sensible about my priorities!! (OT)

 ;)

I hope you're talking about ofajen! Cause I'm not puttin' on a sale!

Consent having been granted, I'll just mention what I have, my asking prices and link to the original post:

3M M-56 1" 8 track, $800
3M M-79 1/2" 4 track, $450
3M M-79 1/4" 2 track, $400
3M M-79 1/2" spare transport with 4-track heads, $200
Ampex AG-440B 1/4" 2 track, $400
AG-440 remote, $150

I also have MRL calibration tapes (1/2" and 1/4"). Both are IEC1, 15 ips at 355 nWb/m. I'm asking $120 for the 1/2" tape and $60 for the 1/4". Sorry, the 1" MRL already sold.

I didn't specify asking prices on the tape stock in the original post:
15 reels of 3M 1" 996, $40/reel for new (3 reels), $30/reel for unspliced, one pass use (2 tracks only) (12 reels)
7 reels of BASF 486 1/2" tape, new, $25/reel
8 reels of BASF 911 1/4" tape, new, $17.50/reel with plastic reel and box
10 reels of Ampex 456 1/4" tape, new, $17.50/reel
6 reels of Ampex 631 1/4" tape, new, $15/reel
5 reels of 3m 996 1/4" tape, new, $20/reel

Thanks!

Yeah, baby!

As you can see, ofajen is listing a ton of great stuff!!!

So, how do I attach pictures? I tried to upload pictures but the server says 64KB is the max. My picture files tend to be bigger than that.

Thanks,

Otto

Download (for free) a software called "Easy Thumbnails". Here's a direct link:

http://www.download.com/Easy-Thumbnails/3000-2192_4-10285473.html?tag=lst-0-1

Within the software, resize the photos to 640 x 480 and bring the "jpeg quality" slider (under settings) to about 75 - 85 % and observe the photo's KB size. Bring it down to about 55KB. Just play with it and you'll find the best quality vs size compromise. It's very easy to figure out. :)

Pictures of the 3M machines

Thanks for the link, but I use a Mac G4, and that seems to be Windows only. Fortunately, I have Photoshop Elements, so I could save the JPEGs from my newly bought (but used) digital camera in low res versions. I'm going to try to attach them here...

the first two are the M-79-4, then the M-56, then the M-79-2. The M-56 is inside a box I made to eliminate machine noise, since I track in the same room as the machines.

Pretty sexy tape machines! Me likes!! :D
Thanks!

I probably wouldn't mind being stuck with, say, the 4-track and the other 2-track I didn't even bother to mention (a rack mountable M-23 from the mid-60s that needs some Amphenol cable ends and a few other fixups). Interestingly, the early M-23 series is actually the prettiest of all the 3M machines, with shiny chrome on the plates and covers and a light gray metal top on the deck.

At any rate, I forgot to mention that the tape speeds are all the standard pairings: all the M-79 machines and the M-56 are 30/15 ips, while the Ampex 2-track is 15/7.5 ips.
