Under $400 please. I need a better vocal mike than this MXL990 pos. Please post your favorite.

I would say Shure SM7, and I like Beyer M88 too. Or if you have to have LDC, any of the $300 contenders should be fine.

Well I don't have a favorite but I have a few that seem to work across a broad range of voices.

SM7 - Just a great rock vocal mic when you need to push it vocally
NTK - Nice big ballad mic, more for males baritones
AT4050 (Probably the best of the bunch)
AT4047 (Female vocals)
V67G - A killer little mic for the price
AT4033 for an overly bland vocalist

All can be had for under $400 with some diligent shopping.

I got a used NTK for less than 400...I also would recommend the AT 4040, 4047, 4050, the SP C1 and B1 are pretty good, a shure SM57, SM58 and SM7. The Sennheiser MD421 is also essential and I love their e609s, as well as the Beyer M201TG. Check out the MXL V67 or V69 as well. You can get a pair of Oktava MK012's (russian) for less than 250, and take a look at the Nady and Shineybox Ribbons which are under 200...

That about covers my experience, and MANY different types of mics...

Now you're talkin' like a real Gear Junkie. Way to go Jake!

If we're talking favs...

The Studio Projects C1 keeps surprising me every time I use it as a vocal mic. It's only $200 so you could get two of them. :D

i second the RE20...it is truely a wonderful mic. i just can't say enough good things about it..

I like the re-20 and have used it many times...great choice for a dynamic mic........for the same (slightly cheaper) price I love my Groove Tubes GT-55 LDC.....great clear sound and smooth high end detail....~$300

We've made our way through almost two hundred mics in the last three years with The Listening Sessions. FWIW...

Under $400 vocal mics:

ADK Vienna and Hamburg - probably the best overall mics in that class.
MXL V69ME - really nice darker, colored tube mic with a classic sound.
Shure SM7 - if you're doing heavy rock it's a must-have.
AT4040 - neutral, grainy. Good if you've got a lot of acoustic instruments.
Studio Projects C1 - Bright, colored. Still a good one for R&B and pop vocals.

My 2¢

Studio Projects C1 ($200) or C3 ($350)
Rode NT1, NT2, NT1000, or K2 can be had for $400 or less.
AT 3060 or 4040 might be found for $400 if you look long enough.
AKG C1000 ($350)
Shure 58, 86, 87, 137 are all decent, all under $300. I like the 86 cuz it's designed to be a handheld stage condenser.
EV ND767, ND967 for stage. RE20 is a tough workhorse, I absolutely love mine, got it for $350 new.
Sennheiser MD421 ($300). 431 ($400), E835 ($150), E865 ($200).
Oktava russian-made ribbons are decent and are usually under $400.

The best tip I can give you is to call Eric at 800-356-5844 (www.fullcompass.com) he has beaten every other mic price I have ever had. But you have to phone them for the best price quote, call them before you buy anywhere else. (No, I dont work there, I just bought all my mics there!) He will most likely beat all the suggested prices I listed above.....

Yes, Full Compass beats everyone else on
price. So support them by buying there.
You have to call for the price, and they don't
sell online. You have to call and give your
credit card number over the phone.
A buddy of mine got a new AT897 there for
$200, which is less than wholesale price.

If you want a really awesome mic, spend $499 and get a Studio Projects T3 (Tube Microphone) It is the best mic I've used to date for vocals.

The RE-16 is definitely a bargain! M88 can be a bargain if you're lucky.

I was amazed at the quality the 88 had on my last recording, I seldom use a dynamic for vocals but on a fluke it was handy and........ really a nice surprise
