Why did I think of camera shots when I heard this? It's very soundtracky...if you were going for that, it worked...instrumentals to me can be kinda dancy, or introspective, or soundtracky (not a bad thing, mind you)...nice level of competence in the playing...percussion could vary more...did you play everything?...gibs

Yeah gibs, you nailed it. I am shopping this to TV music prod. co. looking for music to run under motor sport footage.

I played all guitars, my writing partner played bass (I sometimes play bass too, but this one is too much for me on those big ass frets) and that is a drum machine. I agree that there could be more variation to the drums...still getting the hang of programming that bugger.

Thanks for the comments.
Brad

And gibs...

Thanks for being gentle with me...
It was my first time. ;)

Sounds good... Fits its purpose... I could envision racecars and highlights type commentary... I havent watched televised anything in a few years but it almost sounds a bit on the complex side for TV...
Gook work. I have often toyed with the idea of trying to get a job doing music for video games but I am clueless as far as how to go about doing it...
Looking forward to more...

That could also work for a soundtrack to a Guitar Satan commercial.

Two suggestions:

The Hi-hats seem a little too out front which really makes them feel a little unnatural (especially on those hits, maybe use a different patch there)

Speed this bugger up!

Thanks for the kind words!!!
I was really nervous, I guess my stagefright crosses over into posting an mp3.
Thanks again.

JamesHE,
Thanks for those suggestions.
When I converted it to mp3, that high hat jumped out!
I went back and listened to the CD and damn! It was there too! I am planning to remix this with HH pulled down lower in the mix.

I have been going back & forth on the speed issue. The co-writer thinks it is fine the way it is (I think maybe he is thinking he would have trouble playing the riff any faster!) I could always speed the tape up, but I didn't want to mess with the pitch too much. I'll fiddle with it tonight.

Thanks again!

I liked it a lot. As you are aware, and as everyone has pointed out, the drums could be a little more adventurous but other wise I thought it sounded pretty good. What guitar, amps, mics etc did you use on tracking that guitar sound?

Thanks Cooperman!
I really need to re-think those drums. Thanks for the feedback.

The guitar sound is a Fender Am. St. Strat through a POD. 2 channels of main riff panned hard right and left. 1 channel rhythm gtr right of center. I used the Hi-gain model on the POD, drive all the way up to 11, a touch of built in reverb. No mics used.

I hate drum machines, but I am trying to make do.

Brad:

I like that pretty well. I could envision (is there no word analagous to envision for hearing?) it as music behind a wrestling promo on the radio. You could definitely use some better samples (hihat) for that drum machine, but they're easy enough to come by. The mix sounded pretty good, although it was a little masked by mp3 conversion warble. At what bitrate are you converting?

dmc

A POD huh? Well I can honestly say you had me fooled. Maybe I should get one of these babies if they sound so "real".

dmc,
I'm new to this mp3 stuff, but I think I remember the encoder I used setting a default at 128 for the bit rate, and I clicked the [okay] button. I am very lame when it comes to audio on a computer, so I don't know if 128 is good or not.

Coop,
Yeah, I am pretty happy with the sound of the POD. I can't wait to get my two guitars with humbuckers (Charvel strat & a Les Paul Custom) out of the state of ill repair so I can run some real chunky sounds through that thing.

Nice Job. I could see the race cars.

I think the drums work for this type of thing, although that HH is too up front, which you already know.

Also, dug the guitar sound and playing!

Brad,
Thats a pretty good doing. Nice playing on guitar, I like the bass a lot too. I think faster would be interesting to try. I sure couldn't pull it off, but it would make people think of driving a racecar faster as they grit their teeth trying to pass someone on the inside. Get out of my way you bastard, I'm comin' through! And then throw some onions and mushrooms at them, and laugh like a mad scientist.
Good work.

Brad:

I don't know which encoder you are using, but there are noticeable differences in sound quality between them, even at the same bitrate. I use scmpx (free, small download) and I don't encode at anything less than 192. 192kbps seems to be just out of reach of the warble.

dmc

Bobbo and RC, thanks for the comments!

dmc,
Thanks for the tip on bit rate, didn't know that warble was gonna happen. The upload and download process must add to it, because the actual mp3 that I have on my computer sounds a lot better than if you download it from that site. Next thing I encode, I will try to do it at 192. Unless I want it to sound like I am using a cheap flanger on the whole mix. :)

Oh, and I'm using a demo of SoundJam for Mac.
From reviews I've read, it's pretty good and about the best one can do with a Mac. The demo has all the features of the full version
except that I can only do 10 conversions and I can only use it for 7 days!
