First, thanks to everyone for all the encouragement and support. The story here is that I no longer need my M-Audio DMP3 preamp, since I picked up two DMP2 units for cheap at a local pawn shop (on the heels of several other fairly recent pawn shop scores, like a C414 for $99 and two MC-012s for $25 each). So, to honor the poor devils who sold this cool stuff to the pawn brokers for next to nothing, I'm giving away the DMP3 -- also, this is sort of copying a thread over at GS, but then I heard that there was stuff like this going on here at one point too, so, nothing original here. Hopefully the winner will be in a position to give something else away soon - the "pay it forward" model.
[oh, and btw, I'm a total capitalist, and I've got nothing against selling stuff for money, and I'll prolly sell stuff for money on here sometime, too, and thanks again to Dragon for all this awesome community and infrastructure]
Anyway, in another thread, I asked for up to 12 BBS users (because that's how many poll options are allowed) to throw their usernames in the hat for us all to vote to see who I should send it to (with shipping on me) - we got the 12 pretty quickly - apologies to those who didn't make it in time. To trend toward fairness, I'm limiting voting to accounts that existed prior to me posting the announcement thread (about 2008-10-17 01:00 UTC), and also (previously unannounced requirement
) having at least a few posts on the board prior to that time. Since there's no automatic way to exclude invalid votes, I'll have to make the poll public so I can do a proper tally at the end -- I would have preferred a non-public poll, but there you go. I'll be the final decider of whether a vote is valid or not, based on those criteria. I also reserve the right to change the rules (in a hopefully egalitarian manner) at any time, because there's probably something I haven't thought of yet 
. I doubt we'll have any trouble.
With any luck, I've been able to list the 12 contenders as poll options above. I'm asking each of them to make exactly one post below, explaining to everyone why he/she should receive your vote (other people can post, too, and the contenders can make more than one post if they have to, but voters, please limit your consideration to just the initial pitch-posts -- this is effective like jury instructions ). Please wait until the posts are up or until Sunday (whichever comes first) to start voting -- I have no way to prevent or exclude early voting, just please be cool about it. Also, if it turns out that my whole methodology is flawed here, and there's a much better way to go about this (such as 'first person to PM me gets a free DMP3'), please forgive me, and use this experience to make the next gear-giving endeavor better.
I'm leaving the poll open until Wednesday (it will auto-expire) -- I might have left it open longer, but since I'll be in London next week, leaving Friday morning, I'll take the unit with me and this'll give me a chance on Thursday to send for less cost depending on where the winner is -- otherwise, I'll just take it back with me and ship from the U.S. In any event, I'll ship as early as I can, but don't be surprised if it's not until Oct. 27 or 28 (even if the winner is European -- I might not be able to get the thing shipped while I'm there, etc., etc.)
