Santa brought me a PODxt for Christmas!
What a guy!!! :D
Like many, I'm not blown away by the programmed sounds but I have come up with some of my own that I like.
What are some favs of yours?

I have the Pod XT Live and formerly had the XT. I also have a variax, used to play with a strat mostly.

I love the basic sound of the Dire Straights "Sultan of Swing" sound - basically a fender twin I think. I've tweaked it up a bit but it's my main clean sound, along with a very nice AC-30. The cool thing about the Variax is you can program in a Rick thru and AC-30 with a Leslie... if you wanted, say, a good bright Beatles type sound.

I also love some, but not all, of the Marshall amps, along with the tube screamer pedal emulation.

I also really enjoy experimenting with the delays... lots of sounds available there.

I've been using 4 models a lot lately, all of them on my user patches rather than on a preprogrammed patch.

The first uses the "Line 6 Clean" amp model, with the amp drive setting cranked and a Tube Screamer in front of it to give it just a bit more edge. I add a little bit of compression and obtain a classic edgy/country sound that can also be twangy if you are playing on the bridge pickup of a Strat, for example.

Another of my settings is based on the "Hiway 100" model that emulates at 100-watt HiWatt. This amp model sounds very close to my (real) vintage Matamp GT-100 tube amp and also sounds good with the drive setting cranked up a good ways.

The "Double Verb" model (emulates a '65 Fender Twin Reverb) sounds really good with a slap reverb - gives a good rockabilly tone.

The last patch I've been using a lot is based on the "Variac Plexi" model, which is based on a '68 Marshall Super Lead being voltage-overdriven by a Variac. This is a great model and works well with a number of effects.

A note on the above amp models: run your Pod XT through a good uncolored monitor and take some time to play with the EQ, presence, and drive settings. The factory presets are a bit gutless but you can get good workable tones with all of them.

Enjoy! :)

What kind of music do you play? I bought the Metal Pack, and it has some great amp sims. You have to turn the drive down to get a good recording, as it is way crunchy on most of the presets. I have several presets I have made, and some record very well.

I usually slap in a preset and just adjust some of the settings. Then again, I am an idiot.

Personally I like the Brian May patch, and The Streets Have No Name. I think these are the only two presets I haven't had to jack with too much to get pretty unique sounds out of.

Probably my fav or at least, the one I have to have is the Big Bottom from the Metal Pack. Obviously, this is for a metal tone, but it captures that low-end chunk chunk better than any other tone I've found.

Definately go to the website and check out the library of tones as well as the forums - tweaking gurus there.

As Zaphod said, DEFINATELY run the Pod through the clean monitors when making adjustments. It really sucks if you've got your Pod with you somewhere outside the studio sans monitor speakers and you make this tone that sounds "killer" with the cans on and you get back and it's ass on the monitors (umm, run on sentance?).

I'm with you. there's so many damn options on these things it's hard to know where to start.

I love the "Run Like Hell" patch which is REALLY badly named.

I agree. The Powerball and 5150 are really great too.

have a lot of u guys bought the extra amp/cabs/effects that line6 offers? i was always curious about those, just kinda stingy about money and havent seen anyone that bought those. other than that, i love my podxt.

also, has anyone tried plugging the pod into a poweramp/combo and recording the speakers with a 57 or something? i tried a few days ago, but couldnt get anything i liked. i also never miced a cab, so i didnt really know what i was doing as far as mic placement techniques and so forth. its also kinda hard cuz it was just me in my huge room with the test recording then checking it on monitors method. lol wasnt terribly the most entertaining process ive ever had.

I havent tried it yet but when I had my Johnson J-Station, I would plug it into the line in/effects return on my 100 watt Solid State Yamaha Amp to by-pass the amplifier pre-amp section and it was awesome!

Then I ran it stereo into the Yamaha and my 15" JBL equipped 160 watt Crate Bass Amp. Woof! A Way Big sound.
