I have the Roland VS-2480 and I love it! 24 tracks recording (compressed, but trust me, you can't hear it) or 16 tracks uncompressed. It lets you record 16 simultaneous tracks and 24 total tracks right out of the box. Makes a heck of a live mixer, too. Comes with an effects card built in that does 2 sterio effects at once. They sound pretty good, too. You can upgrade that to 8 sterio effects. It's about $3000 right now. Check it out.

so that thing compresses unless you use only 16 tracks??? iwas actually lookign at one of those but I have done alot of side by side tests in the past and compressed definitely is not acceptable for semi-pro recordings.

I have a 24.4 VLZ, it's basically the same as the 1604 with some added features, it sounds good and it can take a fair amount of abuse. I think it has a more natural sound than the cheaper Soundcraft boards (which I find to be distinctly colored, although not necessarily in a bad way) and it absolutely KILLS Behringer boards both in terms of durability and sound.

Depending on budget and personal taste check out either the Mackie, a Soundcraft, or an Allen & Heath.

Tascam MSR-24,

and your choice of mixers. If you're into vintage, an M600 is cool, and possibly a M2600 or M3700 series mixer, would do the trick.

If you want to know the truth, I have an MSR-24, and have the ultimate in budget mixers. I support the MSR-24 with [3] M30's, and it's a great setup.

I see your first suggestion was Mackie 24VLZ, etc, so my suggestions might be too 'low-tech' or 'vintage' for your tastes.

I swear to god, I have an MSR-24, and support it with [3] Model 30 mixers, and it's a nice setup, that works great. That's just me, though. There might be a member that thinks that's crazy,... an MSR-24 and [3] Model 30's. Hey, it may sound crazy, but it works for me!

Trust me, some can......

Some don't hear what MD algorithms do to the sound either....

What do you think of the 48 channel Eurodesk for 2000.00?

By the way the compression that that roland uses would not be significant untill you bounce the tracks a few times. Ive heard recordings on it and I liked the sound.

If money is not an issue, then I would go for the Mackie or a Soundcraft but, if money is an issue, then the Eurodesk (MX9000) that Darren_h2000 suggested is a good choice.

I use two of these boards linked together in my studio and they suit me fine. They are not as clean as the mackies at high gain but if your on a budget they will give you the most bang for the buck.

BE FOREWARNED: As usual, I am sure a lot of people will piss on me again for suggesting this but remember, dollar for dollar these boards will get you up and running faster than anything else and if you plan it right like me, they will pay for a new board faster than anything else. After a year and a half of problem free board use, I have earned enough money to buy my soundcraft ghost.

Now, I hear a lot of people complain that the Behringer boards are problematic and break down a lot but, my guess is these people that hate them so much and say this have probably never owned one. I own two and never had a problem.

Like I said, when I brought the Mackie and the Behringer home, the only difference I found was the Behringer was a little noisier at HIGH gain levels. Other than that, no difference.

Someone may also try and tell you that the Behringer has a dumb layout, well, look at the Behringer and Mackie side by side and you will see that they are almost identical. As a matter of fact, there is some legal issue between the two companies where Mackie feels that Behringer "ripped off" their design.

Judge for yourself but just another option for you!!

Cheers!

(I await the slams!)

well thanks for that good info. I am going to try to get a soundcraft off ebay or something like that. Should prove to be pretty inexpensive. Within a month or so I am going to be doing mostly DAW based mixing w/ one of those motorized controllers so this soundcraft will be primarily going to be a monitoring device more then anything. I hear they are a pretty good value.

Good luck.

All analog recording/mixing equipment is going for great value, on Ebay, with used gear prices being ~10-30% of original retail.

That spells great analog deals, galore. Check it out. Ebay lists hundreds of analog recorders and mixers, and though quality of gear varies a little, prices are consistently falling. Plummeting.

Analog on Ebay is a great deal,... one after the other, after the other. If you're interested in analog gear, the buying time is right. It's practically a buyers market.

Watch Ebay for a few weeks, and tell me if I'm wrong.
